A RETURN TO TATOOINE! KYLO REN seeks out the home planet of his grandfather, ANAKIN SKYWALKER! The young tyrant must go up against GARDULLA THE HUTT and her guards... and a RANCOR! What secrets of the past blow in the harsh sands of MOS ESPA?
As revealed in the synopsis (and on the variant cover by artist David López), Kylo Ren will be battling a Rancor upon his trip to Tatooine. This new Star Wars comic series is exploring Kylo Ren’s life between the events of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, which is actually when Kylo is at the height of his power. Now, Kylo wants to learn more about his past, and his connection with his grandfather, Darth Vader. That is exactly what leads him to Tatooine, where he’s going to have to fight a Rancor.
Kylo Ren is About to Fight a Rancor, Just Like Luke Skywalker
While Trying to Separate Further from His Former Master, Kylo Ren Becomes More Like Him
Luke Skywalker famously battled a Rancor in Return of the Jedi after infiltrating Jabba’s Palace during the rescue mission of Han Solo. That battle was a standout moment in the entire film, and gave fans an exciting first act action sequence. And now, Kylo Ren is about to experience the exact same thing as his former master, which is especially fascinating given Kylo Ren’s mental state at this moment in time.
Kylo Ren actively turned away from Luke Skywalker when he left the New Jedi Order, and he cemented his disdain for his former master during their duel in The Last Jedi. Now, Kylo Ren is trying to connect more fully with Darth Vader by visiting worlds that held significance in his grandfather’s life. But, ironically, this moment shows that the opposite is going to happen, as Kylo Ren is about to reluctantly follow in Luke Skywalker’s footsteps by effectively recreating his Rancor battle from Episode VI.
Kylo Ren is Also Continuing a Classic Skywalker Tradition: Dealing with the Hutts
Both Anakin and Luke Skywalker Dealt with the Hutts, & Now Kylo Ren is Too
Another interesting parallel between Kylo Ren’s journey and those of his uncle and grandfather is the fact that he’s going to have to deal with the Hutts in this story (before the Rancor). Luke Skywalker famously dealt with Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi before fighting his Rancor, and Anakin Skywalker had to deal with the Hutt Clan many times during the Clone Wars, including and especially in the 2008 film. Now, it’s Kylo Ren’s turn to experience this unofficial Skywalker tradition during his encounter with Gardulla the Hutt.

Star Wars Finally Restores Rose Tico's Deleted Movie Role: "Every Single Ship Is My Responsibility"
Rose Tico was essentially cut from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as the majority of her scenes were deleted, but now, those scenes are restored!
While the ‘Skywalker/Hutt tradition’ is an interesting addition to this new Star Wars story, the main takeaway is clearly the fact that Kylo Ren is about to fight a Rancor just like Luke Skywalker did in Return of the Jedi - becoming a shocking replacement for his former master.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #2 by Marvel Comics is available March 12, 2025.
