The anticipation for the delayed indefinitely, the KOTOR remake's status is still in the air. It may be quite a wait before the game launches, giving fans plenty of time to check out the original, and there are some compelling (and spoiler-free) reasons to do so.
After the reports broke that the Knights of the Old Republic remake was delayed, the development team suggested that 2025 was a reasonable target for its release. Since then, responsibility for the game’s development has shifted to a new studio. Embracer Group maintains that the game will still meet its planned 2022 release, with many in denial of KOTOR’s release date delay. The potentially long wait begs the question: should new players wait for the remake or play the original? It’s an old game, so the hesitation to check out the original KOTOR is understandable.
Those who have not played the original Knights of the Old Republic should absolutely do so before the remake is released. For many reasons, it is one of the greatest Star Wars games, and the remake may make some changes that give the original its charm. The remake will undoubtedly feature massive improvements to gameplay and graphics. These areas alone are enough to provide players with vastly different experiences from the original to the remake. The most pertinent reason to play the original KOTOR is its story, extended into Star Wars: The Old Republic, and to avoid having any of its twists and turns spoiled while waiting for the remake.
The Original Star Wars: KOTOR's Story Still Holds Up
One of the most compelling reasons to play the original Knights of the Old Republic is to experience the story in its original form. It has one of the best Star Wars stories ever told and introduces some exciting concepts and lore to the Star Wars universe, like Force dyads and Gray Jedi. When the remake was announced, the developer confirmed on the PlayStation Blog that it intended to maintain the integrity of the story and characters. Since the studio shakeup, however, this point may be in question.
As great as it is to have beloved characters like Revan in Star Wars canon, making up for the remake's delay, it could come with the cost of a more muted KOTOR story experience in favor of fitting in more tightly with the growing Disney Star Wars continuity. Playing the original will give first-time players an idea of why the game is so beloved in the first place. Thankfully, KOTOR is now widely available on all major consoles, PC, and mobile. Waiting for the remake could take a long time, so now is the time to check out the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
