Watching in horror as Chancellor Palpatine issues the infamous Order 66 makes for one of the most emotional and striking scenes in Star Wars history. The Order, which activates chips embedded in the clones, causes the soldiers to turn on their Jedi generals. This is the start of the Jedi Purge, as Palpatine eliminates as many Jedi as possible.
While we see many of the heroes of previous movies, games, and the Clone Wars animated series fall, a few survive to fight against the new Empire.
Famously, there are the Jedi of the original trilogy: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda. However, there were a number of others who survived, even if only for a time. Some only survived in the now non-canon Star Wars Legends. Other survivors are being added as the new canon fills out the Star Wars galaxy. While not all the Jedi who survived Order 66 escaped the Jedi Purge, merely getting away for a time is an impressive feat.
Of course, fans were rooting for many Jedi to survive, especially those not shown in Revenge of the Sith. It seems hard to believe and accept that so many skilled warriors with profound connections to the force all still fell. Among the slain are some of the Jedi Order's most famous lightsaber combatants and force-adept leaders. Surely not all of them deserved their inglorious fates.
At E3, it was announced that the next Star Wars game is called Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. We thought we could look back over the survivors of the fallen Jedi Order, and the slain or unconfirmed Jedi who ought to have survived the Purge.
Here's Star wars: 12 Jedi Who Survived Order 66 (And 8 Who Should Have)
SURVIVED: CALEB DUME / KANAN JARRUS
When Rebels launched, we met the ragtag crew of the Ghost including de facto leader Kanan Jarrus. When he revealed himself as a Jedi, it was obvious he somehow survived Order 66. Over the course of the series and comic book about his past, we saw how. Kanan Jarrus was actually Caleb Dume, padawan to Master Depa Billaba.
Kanan began teaching Ezra the ways of the force when he discovered he was force sensitive.
He served with his master at the Battle of Kaller in the final days of the Clone Wars. Just as the two were relaxing, Palpatine issued Order 66 and their clones attacked. Billaba urged the young Dume to run, sacrificing herself to buy him time to escape. As a fugitive Jedi, Caleb changed his name to Kanan Jarrus. Hiding his Jedi past, he worked as a smuggler until meeting Hera Syndulla and ing the Ghost.
SHOULD HAVE SURVIVED: SHAAK-TI
The Togruta Jedi Shaak-Ti did not survive Order 66 in the new canon. While we never saw her fate in the movies, there are two deleted scenes of her demise. One is at the hands of General Grievous, the other is an animatic of Anakin attacking her in the Jedi Temple.
Her canonical fate matches the second scene. The Star Wars Galactic Atlas confirms she fell to Vader, while meditating in the Jedi Temple. Before this, she recorded a final message on a holocron urging survivors to keep the Jedi way alive. Luke Skywalker found it much later, in the collection of Jabba the Hutt.
However, in the Star Wars Legends she survives, escaping to train Force sensitives on Felucia until she is defeated by Vader's apprentice Starkiller in The Force Unleashed.
SURVIVED: AHSOKA TANO
The young hero of the Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano, underwent a difficult maturation. Knowing the fate of the Jedi in Episode III, fans were always afraid that Ahsoka would fall alongside the others. Then she was framed for bombing the Jedi Temple and the council expelled her from the Jedi Order. When the true culprit, her friend and fellow Padawan, Barriss Offee was revealed, she refused the offer to re the Order.
Ashoka may have saved herself for denying the Order's offer to re, but she continued to fight for what is right. On her own .
This probably saved her life, as she was not an active Jedi when Order 66 began. Instead she went into hiding, acting under the codename Fulcrum to connect rebel cells. She took up colorless lightsabers to show she had neither fallen to the Dark Side nor called herself a Jedi.
SURVIVED: JOCASTA NU
The librarian of the Jedi Temple archives played a surprisingly significant role in the Clone Wars and comics. In the Star Wars Legends continuity, she fell in Vader's attack on the Jedi Temple at the time of Order 66. But in the new canon, she escaped to gather the Order's artifacts and knowledge.
Nu was once a member of the Jedi Council and her bond with the Force was strong. In the comics, we see her get past clone troopers with a Jedi mind trick, which is probably how she survived.
Vader and the Grand Inquisitor attacked her in the archives, seeking a holocron with locations of known force sensitives. Vader destroyed both the holocron and Jocasta, in defiance of the Emperor's wishes.
SURVIVED: YODA
This one came as no surprise, as the Jedi Grand Master tutors Luke in the ways of the Force in Episode V. It was through Yoda we felt the pain and loss as Order 66 happened. Helped by the Wookies to escape Kashyyyk, Yoda attempted to stop Palpatine in their frenzied battle in the Senate.
As one of the most powerful Jedi of all time, it's no surprise Yoda managed to survive.
After this, Yoda went into exile on the swamp planet Dagobah for the last two decades of his 900-year life. From there he used the Force to keep track of other survivors, even communicating with Ezra, who was training to be a Jedi under Kanan Jarrus.
SHOULD HAVE SURVIVED: YADDLE
Yoda's species is a mystery, as it is one of the few in Star Wars that has never been identified. Apart from the Grand Master, there has only been one other in the current canon: Master Yaddle. Her design was originally for a younger Yoda, but instead became a female Jedi on the council.
Yaddle served for a time on the Jedi Council during the Naboo crisis in Episode I. Afterwards, she took a less active role. Her fate is unknown, but her patience and skill in the Force make her a contender to have survived. She was one of the few practitioners of morichro, a Force power that slows an opponent's body functions to lethal limits.
As many of the other survivors weren't active in the Clone Wars, Yaddle's distance from the war also makers her odds of survival more favorable.
SURVIVED: FERREN BARR
A padawan like Caleb Dune, Ferren Barr escaped Order 66. How the Iktotchi escaped isn't clear, but he made it to Mon Calar where he used mind tricks and persuasion to build a group of acolytes and Force sensitives. Before this, he saw security footage of Anakin's terrible deeds in the Jedi Temple. His escape must have been difficult, as one of his horns broke off in the first year of the Empire.
He may have lost a piece of his horn when he escaped, but he did learn to use his enemy's weapon against them.
He also figured out the activation and function of the implants Palpatine had the Kaminoans install in the clones. Activated by the phrase "Execute Order 66", they override the clones "free will" and make them attack the nearest Jedi. Cornered by ex-Jedi of the Inquisitorius, Barr used this knowledge to turn the clones on the Inquisitors.
SHOULD HAVE SURVIVED: KI-ADI-MUNDI
The large-headed Cerean Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi fell on Mygeeto in a tragic moment in Revenge of the Sith. The Jedi played an important role in both animated Clone Wars series, facing General Grievous. His fast reflexes did not save him from his fate, even though he managed to deflect a few blaster shots before being hit.
Like the many who fell in Episode II, Mundi had little chance of surviving the betrayal. While we can't argue with that, had Mundi survived it would have provided a great opportunity to bring an unused concept to life. For his appearance in Episode III, artist Derek Thompson imagined a battle-scarred look for the Jedi.
They eyepatch would have worked just as well for a rugged survivor of Order 66.
SURVIVED (INITIALLY): LUMINARA UNDULLI
Master Luminara Undulli survived longer in rumor than in reality. While she did not fall in the ambushes as Palpatine issued Order 66, she did not escape the new Empire's clutches. Undulli was fighting alongside the clones and Wookies on Kashyyyk, when the clones attacked. While she managed to escape, there were rumors that she was shot down or that she really had survived.
It's sad to see a powerful Jedi Master being used as a pawn by the Sith.
In Rebels, Kanan and the crew of the Ghost believe she is a prisoner in the Spire. This is indeed true: the Jedi Master was arrested sometime after the battle on Kashyyyk and taken to the Spire. There, the Grand Inquisitor executed her, keeping her remains as a lure to other survivors like Kanan.
SHOULD HAVE SURVIVED: BARRISS OFFEE
In a shocking twist, Luminara Undulli's Padawan Barriss Offee orchestrated a bombing of the Jedi Temple. The Padawan believed the Jedi had lost their way by leading the war. While her methods were extreme, leading to the loss of six Jedi and Ahsoka's expulsion from the Order, her point was truly validated. The Clone Wars enabled Palpatine's rise, and Tano wondered if listening to Barriss could have averted Order 66.
Offee's betrayal had a lasting impact on the Jedi Order, as well as her former friend. She also looked poised to fall to the Dark Side during her arrest, though we never learned of her fate. Ahsoka's survival and distancing herself from the Jedi after the Order's fall have been filled in by novels and Rebels. If Barriss had survived, it would be interesting to see how they would relate.
