In the Darth Vader. However, in a story that takes place between the events of Episode III and Episode IV, it’s revealed that Anakin never stopped believing that he was the Chosen One, even as Darth Vader - and that changes his entire character arc.

In Darth Vader #24 by Charles Soule, Giuseppe Camuncoli, and Daniele Orlandini, Darth Vader used his immense power to open a doorway into the astral realm of dark side energy, where the original soul of Darth Momin resided. When the original spirit of Momin wore his physical mask, he was resurrected, and he and Darth Vader engaged in lightsaber combat.

Darth Vader had just finished defending his fortress from the native warriors of Mustafar, leaving him drained of energy. So, Darth Momin had the upper hand, and as he was cutting Vader down piece by piece, Momin was taunting the Sith Lord. Momin tells Vader that he peered into his spirit, and knows Vader’s past as well as his deepest secrets. Momin knows that Darth Vader was once the Jedi Anakin Skywalker, and that Anakin was considered the Chosen One. Not just that, but Momin knows that Darth Vader still considers himself the Chosen One to this day.

Darth Vader Never Stopped Believing He was the Chosen One, Which Redefines His Actions

Vader Knew that He Would Bring Balance to the Force & Destroy the Sith Before His Death

Anakin Skywalker with Darth Vader behind him.

According to Jedi prophecy, the Chosen One would bring balance to the Force and destroy the Sith. That’s what Qui-Gon Jinn foresaw with Anakin Skywalker, and how he convinced the other Jedi that Anakin was, indeed, the Chosen One. However, in Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan all but confirms that Anakin lost his way, and that he was no longer the Chosen One after ing the Sith. Obi-Wan screams that Anakin was the Chosen One (not is the Chosen One) and that he was meant to destroy the Sith, not them.

Obi-Wan’s words in Revenge of the Sith imply that Anakin Skywalker wasn’t actually the Chosen One. However, even as Darth Vader, Anakin never stopped believing that he was - and he was right to think that. Anakin brought balance to the Force by assisting in the slaughter of thousands of Jedi during Order 66, which evened the playing field of light and dark siders in the galaxy. Then, Darth Vader completes the prophecy by killing Darth Sidious in Return of the Jedi before dying himself, thereby destroying the Sith.

In fact, Darth Vader's motivation for killing Emperor Palpatine takes on a totally different light now that fans know Vader continues to believe he was the Chosen One. Perhaps when he killed the Emperor, it wasn’t just to save his son, Luke Skywalker, but it was a moment of clarity where Darth Vader finally saw how he could destroy the Sith once and for all and complete his mission as the Chosen One - something Darth Vader always held onto even after the ‘death’ of Anakin Skywalker.

By holding onto the belief that he was the Chosen One, Vader’s actions could be seen as deliberate steps toward fulfilling the prophecy. But, interestingly enough, it seems he didn’t even become the Chosen One until he became Darth Vader. The Jedi thought Anakin would bring balance to the Force as a Jedi, but that didn’t actually happen until he fell to the Sith. So, while it may be shocking to learn that Vader still considered himself the Chosen One even after his corruption, it’s even more interesting to consider that he didn’t even become the Chosen One until then.

Anakin Skywalker believed so fiercely that he was the Chosen One that he held onto that belief after becoming Darth Vader, and based on what the task of the Chosen One actually entailed, it seems clear that Anakin the Jedi wasn’t the Chosen One at all, and wouldn’t claim that title until he became a Sith. This completely goes against preconceptions about the prophecy, but it lines up with it completely, which totally changes Darth Vader’s entire character in Star Wars.

Conceived by the will of the Force itself, Anakin Skywalker was the prophesied Chosen One, destined to bring the Force into balance. Anakin struggled to balance competing attachments to the Jedi Order and his wife Pé Amidala, and ultimately fell to the dark side, becoming Darth Vader. For years he served as Palpatine's right hand man, but he was ultimately redeemed by the faith of his son, Luke Skywalker. Now a Force Ghost, Anakin continues to act as an agent of balance.
