Damon Lindelof is reportedly writing a new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which is exactly the point where the franchise needs to build up from. With a prolonged gap since The Rise of Skywalker, how and when Star Wars will return to the big screen are questions that remain to be unanswered. Following a series of Star Wars movie announcements, none of which currently has a release date, the updates on Damon Lindelof Star Wars movie are exciting not only because they show that the project is movie forward but also because the details regarding timeline and characters sound very promising.

According to the Star Wars sequels, yet it will not be an actual Episode 10. Instead, the Damon Lindelof Star Wars movie will be a standalone story that may leave the door open for future sequels if it is successful, and it will likely introduce new characters. While the THR report does not mention any details on the story, just the fact that Lindelof’s Star Wars movie will move the saga beyond The Rise of Skywalker instead of trying yet another prequel or spinoff is exciting. Lindelof’s Star Wars movie is in the early stages, but it is already one of Star Wars’ most promising projects.

Damon Lindelof's Star Wars Movie Is Better Than An Episode 10

Although The Rise of Skywalker was designed as the end of Return of the Jedi, continuing the Skywalker Saga in Episode 10 and beyond would be too difficult. The Rise of Skywalker’s ending was highly divisive, as any ending involving that many iconic characters would have been. By setting Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars movie after The Rise of Skywalker despite it not being Episode 10, Lucasfilm avoids repeating both the challenges and the mistakes from the sequel trilogy while also moving the Star Wars story forward.

Star Wars Future Should Have More Post-Sequels Movies

Even if Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars movie ends up being a standalone entry, Star Wars should continue to deliver more post-sequels stories. While Star Wars shows have been working, they have all been set in familiar time periods – which obviously limits how creative and innovative the stories can be. There is a lot of unexplored Star Wars potential in the distant past, such as the Old Republic, but the most interesting period Star Wars could explore right now is the post-Episode IX galaxy. For the first time in years, Star Wars has the opportunity to create something from scratch – even if it also adds characters from the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

For all its flaws, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker wrapped up the Skywalker Saga and allowed Star Wars to build a new legacy. Whether it follows Watchmen prove that this new Star Wars movie can be unlike anything in the franchise, and all the better for it.
