The worlds of bizarre aliens, and cloak-wearing villains make up this galaxy far, far away. One of the most crucial elements, though, are the droids.

These robotic characters range from horrifying to adorable. Their designs are all over the place, with some resembling humans while many look like toasters with legs. Without a doubt, the droids of the Star Wars universe are an essential and long-standing element of the saga.

Droideka

Destroyer droids attack in The Phantom Menace.

When it came to the automaton villains of the prequels, most of the Separatist droid army left a lot to be desired. The standard B-1 Battle Droids were nothing more than laser fodder, annoying fans with their cries of "roger roger".

But, the Droideka were the best and scariest part of this droid army. These rolling destroyer droids had a design unlike anything ever seen in the franchise. Add on the fact that their bodies were encased in a massive shield that made them quite the formidable foe.

Captain Rex

Star Wars and Disney have had a relationship that extended far beyond their merger in 2014. The ride Star Tours opened in Disneyland in Anaheim, California in 1987, taking fans to their favorite galaxy for the first time.

The captain was none other than Captain Rex, a bumbling pilot droid who took you on a rollicking new adventure. R-3x, his official designation, has appeared now in canon through both Star Wars: Rebels, as well as making the move over to Galaxy's Edge.

0-0-0 & BT-1

BT-1 and 0-0-0 attack in Marvel Comics.

What would happen if R2-D2 and C3-PO turned to the dark side? Well, this sinister pair of droids is essentially the answer to that question. First appearing in the Darth Vader comic series and now in Doctor Aphra, Tripple Zero and Beetee One are a maniacal pair of torture droids.

Beetee honestly is nothing more than a weapon box, ready to unleash a hell storm at any time. Triple Zero, though, is full of hate and spite and is the brains of the two. Together, they have tortured and murdered their way across the galaxy, and we love them for it.

Professor Huyang

Droid Professor Huyang in Clone Wars

There is no other droid like Professor Huyang. This droid is over a thousand years old and is still as functional as ever. Huyang's duties were essential to assist in teaching young Jedi how to properly assemble their lightsabers.

Voiced by Doctor Who star David Tennant, Huyang was full of wit and wise saws. Though only appearing in The Clone Wars, Huyang had a major impact, revealing to have been the teacher who showed Jedi like Yoda and Mace Windu how to build their sabers. Let's hope this droid comes back in a future Knights of the Old Republic spinoff.

L3-37

Voiced by Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, L3-37 was co-pilot alongside Lando Calrissian during his ownership of the Millenium Falcon. A proponent for Droid's rights, L3 is a strong-spoken droid dedicated to her beliefs.

Waller-Bridge brings her classic blend of deadpan and wit to the character, making L3 unlike any droid before her. The added fact that she becomes a part of the Falcon means that although she perished on Kessel, she'll never be far away.

Chopper

Chopper Star Wars Rebels

Chopper was the grumbly astromech aboard the rebel freighter The Ghost. Alongside Hera, Ezra, and the gang, Chopper assisted in the early days of the rebellion, no matter how much he complained about it.

Chopper was incredibly impactful, serving as the grumpy grandpa version of R2-D2 in the animated series. He was so beloved by fans that he even made it into the live-action films. In the background of Rogue One, Chopper can be seen rolling along in the Rebel Base on Yavin IV.

K2-SO

Speaking of Rogue One, who can forget the standout performance from Alan Tudyk as former Imperial security droid K2-SO? Without a doubt, K2 was one of the best parts of this standalone Star Wars story, serving both as an homage to legacy characters like HK-47 and as a droid unlike anything seen before.

Being voiced by an actor like Alan Tudyk meant that K2 was going to be chock full of humor. He certainly didn't disappoint, serving as some of the only levity in the entire film. Out of all the deaths of Rogue One, his is arguably the most heartbreaking. Luckily, we can't wait to see his return on Disney+.

BB-8

One of the first characters fans got to see in the early marketing for The Force Awakens was this tiny little BB unit. Little did we know how quickly he would roll into our hearts. BB-8 quickly became nearly as beloved as legacy characters like Threepio and Artoo.

This little ball droid has a design unlike any other droid in the universe, rolling around on a little sphere instead of a pair of legs. He is seriously one of the cutest things to ever appear in the series, and no matter how The Rise of Skywalker ends, we are sure his reputation won't be tainted.

C3-PO

C3po in Revenge of the Sith

C3-PO is one half of the duo that started off this whole journey we all have been going on for the past forty years. a small cameo as a slave in Solo.

From what we have seen from the marketing from The Rise of Skywalker, it looks like C3-PO will be getting the send-off he deserves. After, all this time and all the laughs he gave us, that's the least he deserves.

R2-D2

No one else could take the number one spot from everyone's favorite astromech. R2D2, like Threepio, has been in every film of the Skywalker Saga, and also in Rogue One. Few other characters have been as influential to galactic events as much as this little droid.

Visually speaking too, R2's design is one of the most iconic character designs of the entire series. He is the template for every cute character in the entire Saga. Artoo is essentially our best friend and companion, and a constant presence in these films.
