Andor sits triumphantly among the highest echelons of Star Wars media, but its timeline placement makes it a poor fit to inspire the long-requested incredible second season, but it does so in spite of largely lacking the bombastic action the Battlefront games depend on. Between Pandemic Studios' and DICE's four main Battlefront entries, much of the Skywalker Saga has been covered, and a third game to follow 2017's Battlefront 2 would likely move away from the setting that makes Andor so compelling.

On the back of Star Wars Day and the franchise's newfound excitement courtesy of Andor season two, Battlefront 2 has seen a resurgence, leading once again to DICE's third Battlefront was turned down by EA, reportedly due to the cost of licensing. If Battlefront 3 does ever surface, it's likely to be far less interesting than Andor.

Battlefront 3 Wouldn't Fit Into Andor's Timeline

There Isn't Enough Open Conflict

Andor is rightfully getting its flowers, and it's understandable that fans want more Star Wars in a similar vein, but it takes place in a very specific part of the franchise timeline that can't sustain a game like Battlefront. Andor begins in 5 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin), and its final episode ends in 1 BBY, with the story being handed off to Rogue One. The events of the original Star Wars, now subtitled A New Hope, then comprise 0 BBY/ABY.

The Star Wars timeline is a little fuzzy in delineating year zero. Andor runs directly into Rogue One, which also takes place in 1 BBY, and in turn runs directly into A New Hope, which clearly doesn't take place over a full year, but heralds 1 ABY.

At this time, there was very little conventional warfare occurring in the galaxy. The Rebel Alliance had not yet cemented its fighting force, with any battle of note typically involving smaller resistance cells being stamped out by the Empire. Saw Gerrera's Partisans are engaging in numerous operations, but they're largely sabotage missions looking to strike quickly at Imperial logistics.

Battlefront 3 could theoretically cobble together adaptations of some of these smaller skirmishes, but it would be taking a lot of liberties with both the established canon and its own scope. Battlefront has long focused on the largest galactic conflicts, namely the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War, both of which have fronts to battle on (get it?). DICE's Battlefront 2 featured theaters from the First Order-Resistance War in post-launch content, but the game's additions were little more than smatterings from across the entire Skywalker Saga.

Battlefront has a certain grandeur about it that doesn't gel with the established happenings during Cassian Andor's time in the sun. It's a game series that effectively conveys the sheer size of the Star Wars universe, letting players mobilize en masse to the front lines of conflicts spanning many star systems. Anything that takes inspiration from Andor couldn't deliver something like Battlefront's classic Galactic Conquest mode; there simply isn't warfare open enough to it between 5 and 1 BBY.

Battlefront 3 Would Probably Take Place During Disney's Sequel Trilogy

Disney Loves Its New Era

Despite the general lack of enthusiasm for Episodes 7, 8, and 9, the First Order-Resistance War is the obvious setting for any potential Battlefront 3, and would likely still be a major component if the game features elements from the entire Skywalker Saga like previous installments. DICE's Battlefront 2 came out roughly a month before The Last Jedi, but its story still takes place during the Galactic Civil War, culminating with the Battle of Jakku.

The original Battlefront 2 centers on the 501st Legion as it battles through the final stages of the Clone Wars and transitions into the fearsome Vader's Fist during the rise of the Empire. Both Battlefront games, 2004 and 2015, have looser collections of single-player missions. Following a Resistance fighter or a First Order soldier would be the clear route forward for the series, and would likely be Disney's preference.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disney World has a notable focus on the sequel trilogy, the Resistance, and the First Order, and that era is clearly seen as the future of the franchise. Star Wars has done some work filling the gaps in and around the original and prequel trilogies, but Battlefront hasn't focused heavily on the sequel trilogy. If any potential Battlefront 3 wanted to truly push the envelope and deliver a new experience, it would unfortunately have to center on the First Order-Resistance War.

The other options feel much more unlikely, even if they would be ittedly more interesting, like a Battlefront set during the High Republic or Old Republic. Instead, Disney would likely look into an opportunity for tie-in content with Star Wars films. Both The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter take place well after AndorThe Mandalorian is set after Return of the Jedi, and Starfighter will be set roughly five years after The Rise of Skywalker.

Battlefront 3 Is A Pipe Dream Anyway

EA's Interest Probably Hasn't Changed

Players may be returning to Battlefront 2 in the wake of Andor and Star Wars Day, but the resurgent interest isn't likely to convince EA to green-light a third game. Licensing costs probably haven't gotten any more reasonable, and EA already layoffs that affected BioWare a couple of months prior.

recently announced Zero Company from Bit Reactor. This is all in addition to DICE, which would presumably be Battlefront 3's primary developer, having a lot on its plate at the moment creating the next Battlefield, a series generally considered to be one more disappointment away from being shelved indefinitely.

The ethereal idea of a Battlefront 3 is certainly enticing, but I'm not sure the reality would actually be worthwhile. It would likely center heavily on the First Order-Resistance War, which is a woefully uninspired rehash of the Galactic Civil War, an issue that consistently dogs every sequel film not called The Last Jedi, but that's beside the point. Andor has reminded everyone that Star Wars can actually be good – excellent even – but its very specific place in the timeline doesn't cater to the wishes that it inspire a Battlefront 3.
