Summary

  • An Star Wars show set in the High Republic Era will finally answer the questions left unanswered by the prequel trilogy.
  • The prequel trilogy focused on Anakin Skywalker's journey to becoming Darth Vader but overlooked the significant events that led to the collapse of the Jedi Order and the Republic.
  • The Acolyte will provide a different perspective by showcasing the Sith's plot to take over the galaxy and completing the full picture of the prequel era.

Recently, the one Star Wars show will finally take the audience back in time to show what really happened in the galaxy before the prequels.

The prequel trilogy focused on what led Anakin Skywalker to ultimately embrace the dark side and become Darth Vader. And while this was crucial for the audience to see, the bigger-picture issues were largely glossed over. Yes, the films showed the collapse of both the Jedi Order and the Republic, but it struggled to convey the gravity of these momentous moments. The Republic had stood for over a millennium, and the Jedi existed for several thousand years before falling. Yet the prequels largely ignored the events that ultimately led to their catastrophic demise.

The Star Wars Prequels Left Many Unanswered Questions

Despite the success of the prequels, they weren’t exactly the films the audience expected to follow up the original trilogy. Anakin’s fall to the dark side and Palpatine’s subsequent takeover clearly helped set up the original films, but there were still plenty of loose threads the prequels failed to address. For example, the trilogy began with an already decrepit and decaying Jedi Order, yet it never addressed what happened beforehand that made the Jedi so weak. Similarly, how Palpatine and the Sith managed to infiltrate the Senate before Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is never shown.

The prequel trilogy did a fantastic job answering many of the lingering questions from the original trilogy, such as how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. But while they answered plenty of questions, the prequels asked even more questions about what came before them. Disney’s answer to these questions has been the introduction of the High Republic Era, which began hundreds of years before the prequel trilogy. This Era has almost exclusively been confined to Star Wars novels; however, the franchise is about to bring the High Republic Era to live-action and finally answer the questions left by the prequels.

2024 Will Take Star Wars TV Where It Has Never Gone Before

Perhaps the most exciting prospect of Star Wars’ 2024 TV shows is one project taking the franchise where it has never gone before in live-action.

how the Sith hid from the Jedi Order for centuries, and how they came to power before The Phantom Menace. Something major had to have happened before the prequels for such an imbalance in power between the Jedi and the Sith to have occurred. Nevertheless, whatever caused the shift in power was subtle enough for the Jedi not to notice it until it was too late.

The Acolyte is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2024.

The prequels are character-driven stories told from the perspective of the Jedi. And since the Jedi are ignorant of the Sith’s plot to take over the galaxy, the stories only hint at the weakness within the Order. In other words, the prequels are only half the story; the Acolyte promises to tell the other half from the Sith’s perspective, completing the full picture. By going back before The Phantom Menace, The Acolyte will show the tail end of the golden age for the Jedi Order, long before their ability to use the Force had diminished.

Disney's Star Wars Prequel Completely Breaks Lucas' Vision

The Acolyte promises to be a completely different Star Wars show, but it might have strayed away from George Lucas' plans for the franchise.

Lucas deliberately chose to leave out the events leading up to The Phantom Menace because they didn’t fit his story structure. Much like how A New Hope begins with the Death Star plans already stolen, The Phantom Menace begins with Palpatine’s mastermind plan already in action. All the details on how Palpatine infiltrated the Senate and how the Jedi were blind to his machinations were not necessary for Anakin’s fall to the dark side. Instead, Lucas focused on Anakin and Pé’s relationship, while also showing Palpatine’s influence over Anakin.

While the events leading up to the fall of the Jedi and the Republic weren’t necessary for the prequels, Lucas never went back to fully flesh out these crucial plot points. Instead, Star Wars Legends was left to fill in the gaps on what happened before The Phantom Menace. Now, Disney’s High Republic Era novels will serve as a basis for The Acolyte to build up toward the prequels. In a sense, The Acolyte will be the prequel that begins the entire Skywalker Saga in Star Wars.
