  • Bormanis, a science consultant and writer for Star Trek series, recalls his role in shaping the alien species on the show.
  • Despite his contribution to the Aenar, Bormanis humorously notes there are no alien character royalties in the industry.

Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak) on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds owes a debt to Star Trek series, and he worked on Star Trek: Enterprise as a writer and producer. Bormanis is credited with writing 12 episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise, including "Silent Enemy", "Horizon", "The Crossing", "Babel One", "Terra Prime", and, of course, "The Aenar", which introduced the blind subject of the Andorian race.

Andre Bormanis appeared as a guest on The D-Con Chamber, the new podcast hosted by Star Trek: Enterprise's Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating. As part of their far-ranging interview about Bormanis' writing career, Andre, Dominic, and Connor reminisced about working together on Enterprise, and Bormanis reminded the hosts that he invented the Aenar, which led to the creation of Lt. Hemmer on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Read his quote and watch The D-Con Chamber video below:

Andre Bormanis: I invented the Aenar. Do you the race, the Aenar, the albino Andorians? I came up with that! They had one of those on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. One of the main characters in the first season was an Aenar.

Connor Trinneer: That’s gotta feel like a trophy.

Andre Bormanis: It was. They don’t have alien character royalties, unfortunately. If you invent a character, yes. But a species, no.

Enterprise Has Become More Influential In Modern Star Trek

Touches of Captain Archer and the NX-01 can be found everywhere

For years, Star Trek: Enterprise was blamed as the prequel that "killed the franchise", but modern Star Trek recognizes Enterprise's true importance. J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009) includes a reference to "iral Archer's beagle", while the Enterprise-era USS Franklin and MACO space marines are pivotal in Star Trek Beyond. Star Trek: Prodigy introduced a Denobulan, Lt. Barniss Frex (Eric Bauza), and another Denobulan was seen in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Star Trek: Lower Decks has included several funny shout-outs to Enterprise, Commander Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer), Lt. Malcolm Reed (Dominic Keating), and even Mirror Universe Archer (Scott Bakula).

Connor Trinneer voiced Trip Tucker for the first time since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2023's Star Trek: very Short Treks.

However, Star Trek: Discovery has given Star Trek: Enterprise the most just due, which is fitting since Discovery is the Star Trek series that premiered after Enterprise following a 12-year gap. Discovery's season 1-3 blue Starfleet uniforms updated Enterprise's utilitarian blue jumpsuits. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 made a Denobulan scientist one of the geniuses who found and hid the Progenitors' ancient technology. Best of all, Doctor Kovich (David Cronenberg) revealed his true identity as temporal Agent Daniels (Matt Winston) from Star Trek: Enterprise. All of these nods Lt. Hemmer on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, who hails from the Aenar race invented by Star Trek: Enterprise.
