Star Trek: The Next Generation could help her find professional and personal peace. Raffi debuted in Star Trek: Picard season 1, where she was living as something of a hermit in the desert after being expelled from Starfleet. She would reluctantly the crew of La Sirena to help Picard track down Soji, the synthetic offspring of Lieutenant Commander Data.
While determined and brilliant, Raffi isn't the ideal Starfleet officer. Even after being reinstated to Starfleet in Picard season 2, Raffi was prone to fits of rage and impulsive actions that sometimes came back to bite her and her allies. Raffi's romance with Seven of Nine was often chaotic; ironically, the former Borg drone was often able to express herself more efficiently than Raffi. Perhaps Raffi simply needs some healthier peers, which she's likely to get in Picard season 3 as the crew of the Enterprise-D returns to aid Picard in his final adventure. Learning by example from the likes of Riker and Worf could be just what Raffi needs.
Raffi’s Problems With Picard & Starfleet Explained
Raffi was an up-and-coming lieutenant commander 14 years before the events of Star Trek: Picard season 1. She was a Romulan expert who was assisting iral Picard in his efforts to save as many Romulan lives as possible before a supernova wiped out their home planet Romulus. After Starfleet pulled out of the Romulan evacuation effort in the wake of a devastating attack on Mars, Picard resigned in protest, and Raffi was essentially fired for her association with Picard.
Raffi sunk into a deep depression, resenting Star Trek. She became estranged from her family, particularly her son Gabriel, who resented her for her workaholic days in Starfleet and her continuous obsession with Romulan conspiracy theories. Even after being reinstated, Raffi was clearly not at the top of her game, as her reaction to Elnor's death bordered on insubordination, and her actions on the proceeding mission were erratic and impulsive.
The TNG Crew Can Help Raffi Become A Better Starfleet Officer
Star Trek: Picard season 3 will see Jean-Luc Picard's beloved Enterprise crew return to assist him in his mysterious final mission. Raffi and Seven are the only of Picard's new crew who will be coming along for the ride. Seven has been a staple of the franchise since her days on Star Trek: Voyager and likely knows at least some of the TNG crew. Raffi is definitely the outsider in this scenario, and could probably learn a thing or two from the seasoned TNG crew.
An obvious parallel is Worf, the Klingon warrior who was raised and lived among humans for most of his life. Much like Raffi, Worf was initially driven by a deep rage inherent to his people which was compounded by his status as an outsider. Worf now refers to himself as a pacifist, seemingly having found the inner peace he struggled to attain during his days on the Enterprise and Deep Space Nine. Perhaps Worf could teach Raffi to temper her anger and become a more well-rounded officer and person. Star Trek: Picard season 3 figures to be a dense, intense ride, but hopefully there's enough time to give Raffi some peaceful closure.
