A new mobile game Star Trek Fleet Command, but a console release hasn't been seen since 2017's Star Trek: Bridge Crew.

Star Trek video games date back to 1979's Star Trek: Phaser Strike, a shoot-em-up success that launched for the Microvision at the same time as Star Trek: The Motion Picture released. The popularity of the franchise resulted in a number of other game launches across console, PC, and mobile in the following years, with the most recent Star Trek games offering handheld play for both iOS and Android devices. While official games are now thin on the ground when it comes to consoles, players have been recreating some of the series' most iconic ships and locations with Star Trek builds in games like Minecraft.

Revealed during The Game Awards 2021, new studio Dramatic Labs offered a first look at Star Trek: Resurgence, a third-person choice-driven narrative adventure coming to Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC in spring 2022. The studio, which includes a number of former Telltale Games developers, promises to deliver an immersive Star Trek experience set aboard the U.S.S. RESOLUTE. Players will take on the roles of First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz in order to "unravel a sinister mystery involving two alien civilizations on the brink of war." Kevin Bruner, Founder of Dramatic Labs explained in a press release that the game comes from fans of Star Trek, stating:

“As fans of Star Trek, it’s truly an honor to be crafting a story which puts players right in the heart of the action, where significant choices and decisions will affect the entire narrative. Built from the ground up using Epic’s Unreal engine and our proprietary narrative engine, this game showcases our team’s evolution in creating thought-provoking story-rich adventures.”

Fans of Star Trek games can expect to meet some familiar - as well as new - faces during their time with the game, but it's possible that the title's story will be its highlight. Developers on Star Trek: Resurgence have previously worked on emotionally-charged narrative choice-based successes including The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series, The Wolf Among UsBatman: The Telltale Series, and more, suggesting that the game's story will be one Star Trek fans won't want to miss.

With a spring 2022 release date, there's not too long to wait until players can try out Star Trek: Resurgence for themselves. Telltale games have previously drawn criticism for their many player choices not impacting the gameplay as significantly as they could, and the new team at Dramatic Labs could improve on how choices in games can change the story. The launch of the next Star Trek game is just a few months away, making it likely the developer will share more on its narrative in the coming weeks and months.
