Star Trek: Discovery's Doug Jones proudly runs down his history-making moments as his character, Captain Saru. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 premieres Thursday, April 4, on Paramount+. Doug Jones has been a series regular and one of the leads of Star Trek: Discovery since its inception, playing the comionate and wise Saru, the first Kelpien in Starfleet and in the Star Trek franchise.

As I look back on being a Kelpien, there hasn't been any Kelpiens in any Star Trek shows before this. So that was kind of special, for me to help develop and grow Saru from the ground up. And also to be the first alien species in a captain's chair for an entire season on the title ship. Hadn't happened before. And also to have a love interest, to have a romantic story while you're looking nonhuman, it's another kind of unique thing that I'm glad I had fun experiencing with Saru.

Saru's career and love life are about to have a drastic change

Doug Jones isn't done making history as Saru in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. As the final season begins, Captain Saru is serving as First Officer to Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) aboard the USS Discovery. However, Saru confronts a pending career change that could see him move on up in Starfleet. What is next for Captain Saru is undoubtedly going to be another history-making career move for the first Kelpien in Starfleet.

When Saru was introduced, he was seen as the Spock of Star Trek: Discovery.

Saru's romance with President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) is also going to intensify in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. What that means isn't clear, but if wedding bells happen for T'Rina and Saru, it would be the first interspecies union between a Kelpien and a Vulcan in Star Trek. When Saru was introduced, he was seen as the Spock of Star Trek: Discovery, and Doug Jones, along with brilliant writing, have turned Saru into a character with just as much depth, complexity, and substance. Hopes are high that Saru gets a worthy ending when Star Trek: Discovery comes to a close.
