Reagan To may not have been allowed to watch Squid Game when she first lent her voice to it, but she has soaked up every moment of virality since her iconic killer doll voice hit social media. When the show became a worldwide sensation in 2021, one of the most memorable scenes was Young-hee's singsong robot voice chanting "Red light, green light" as players died, and season 2 brought her back for a twist on the same game. What fans may not have known, however, is that the actor in the English dub was merely 10 at the time.

Not only does To give voice to Young-hee in the English dub, she also dubs the lines for Gi-hun's estranged daughter, Ga-yeong — a fact that can make Squid Game rather chilling in a new way upon rewatch. Now 13 years old, To has a better understanding of the series after season 2, but she has also branched out into much more family-friendly fare. She has also participated in dubs for another popular K-drama, Sisyphus: The Myth, and participated in Pixar's Elemental. She even played a memorable live-action role in Young Sheldon season 7, where she was the adorable Mei-Tung.

Reagan To Breaks Down The Nitty-Gritty Steps Of Recording Lines For Squid Game

“Make Sure That Everything Is Perfect Down To The Breathing”

ScreenRant: How did you get the gig dubbing for Squid Game? I read that you didn’t know which show it was until later.

Reagan To: Yeah, I had no idea Squid Game would blow up this big! I'm still in shock to this day, and I'm so grateful to be a part of it. When I auditioned for it, it was actually my first voiceover audition in general, so it was a really cool experience. I was so shocked that I booked it, but I guess I did a good job with the audition.

ScreenRant: Is the experience of doing a dub much different from a regular voiceover gig? Did you need to watch Young-hee, the doll, onscreen to match mouth movements? Or did they record your lines in isolation?

Reagan To: Dubbing Squid Game and doing the voiceover for something like Elemental are really different, not just because they're different ideas completely, but because dubbing is different from voiceover - although Elemental was technically loop group.

In animation, you basically record your voice and then the animators animate the characters to you. But for dubbing, it's quite different because it's basically translation. In Squid Game, I translated Korean to English, so I recorded "Red Light, Green Light." I've done dubbing for multiple languages now, and it's really cool. I did one yesterday that's coming out soon, and it was so fun.

Dubbing is kind of like karaoke, where there's a bar [highlighting where in the line you are], and you have to match the character's mouth. You can actually watch the episode right in front of you, and you also have to make sure that everything is perfect down to the breathing. It's very particular. Of course, Squid Game is a bit easier because she's a robot that doesn't really breathe. But it's still definitely a challenge to match it up perfectly.

ScreenRant: The Korean actor voicing the robot had to record the same line multiple lines, so that means you had to follow her lead on that, right?

Reagan To: I recorded a lot; we spent quite a while on it, and I did pretty much a different reading for each time she says it. I believe it's season 2, episode 3 where they play "Red Light, Green Light." In the last five seconds, Gi-hun saves another person, and there's a slow-mo of the line, so I had to say it really slowly. It was very interesting because if they had slowed it down themselves, the voice and pitch would change. I had to slow myself down, which was a really cool detail.

“I Don't Know What Those Dolls Are Up To”

ScreenRant: You also dubbed Gi-hun's daughter, Ga-Yeong in. We didn't get to see much of her in season 2, but what would you have her say to him if he gives her the chance to speak in season 3?

Reagan To: In season 2, he does call her up and doesn't really say anything for some reason. I did say a few lines, so I was like, "Hello, is it you, Dad?" But he did not respond to me, so maybe next time I would just add, "Dad, are you coming home?"

ScreenRant: Obviously, Squid Game has gone viral many times over. Do you have a favorite moment of realization that you were part of something so huge?

Reagan To: There are many moments I'm very grateful for that Squid Game has brought me. One that I was when S-N-L did a Squid Game skit, which I thought it was amazing. I was really young when that came out, but that was so cool to watch. And they used my voice!

I also went to the season 2 premiere, where I got to meet Lee Jung-jae. He was amazing, and I got to see the whole cast, which was such a dream come true. Actually, they had this big robot doll and everyone could play "Red Light, Green Light." It was so cool to hear my voice coming out of a giant doll creature that was controlling a hundred people playing.

ScreenRant: Squid Game season 3 is coming. Have you gotten to record lines for it yet? And can you tease anything about Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-su?

Reagan To: I'm not allowed to say, but if you guys want to know what happens in season 3, make sure to watch on June 27th.

ScreenRant: You've even gotten to do skits on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Do you have a favorite celebrity interaction?

Reagan To: I was on Jimmy Kimmel three or four times, but I have not met Jimmy Kimmel yet. I've done skits with different celebrities but, hopefully if Jimmy Kimmel reads this, I'll actually meet him next!

But I did one with Channing Tatum and Rami Malek, which was really fun. We were just having a fun conversation and telling jokes, it was so funny. There was one that was like, "How does Lady Gaga like her steak?" And the answer was like, "Rah, rah, rah, rah, rah" from "Bad Romance." That was my favorite.

ScreenRant: You also have a ion for dancing and have competed plenty. How did that emerge, and what different itch in your brain does dancing scratch?

Reagan To: I'm a ballroom dancer, and I've done it since I was very little. It's very different from acting, but I feel like it does help because you learn musicality and how to get into the rhythm of things.

When you compete, actually, you don't know what song you're dancing to. You just go on the stage, and they play a random song that you have to dance your routine to. It's very different from a contemporary competition.

One of my dreams is to be on Dancing with Stars. That's hopefully something I can accomplish. I know there was a Dancing with the Stars: Juniors, so I hope that show comes back! But if not, hopefully, I'll be on Dancing With the Stars when I'm older.

Squid Game season 2 is now available to stream on Netflix, and season 3 premieres June 27.
