Warning: SPOILERS for Spy x Family chapter #111

Spy x Family just gave fans a first look at Anya's mom, confirming and expanding the precocious toddler's origins. As a whole, Spy x Family isn't afraid of tragic backstories. The adeptly written series has been using them as one means of letting darker themes intrude on the heartwarming comedy and gripping action.

Nonetheless, Spy x Family also isn't exactly known for its in-depth coverage of its characters' backgrounds. Wherever they're hinted at, they tend to loom behind the surface as a secret left to be unraveled. During a critical juncture in its story, Spy x Family chose chapter #111 as the chance to finally give fans a look at Anya's own backstory, which has remained one of the series' biggest mysteries.

Spy x Family Finally Shows Anya's Mother in Chapter #111

Dressed in Hospital Gowns, Anya and Her Mother Share a Touching Scene in a Dream

Chapter #111 features a dream sequence of a sleeping Anya, in which she and her mother are walking outside wearing hospital gowns. Seeing a butterfly, Anya stumbles over its name as it takes flight, prompting her mother to ask if it would be nice if she and Anya could also soar through the sky. Anya then grips her mother's gown tightly and lets out a "mama" before she's woken up by Yor, gently scolding her for strangling house pet Bond in her sleep.

The latter detail makes it clear the dream is a distressing experience for Anya, and it obviously reflects a background that has already been teased before. It's been known for a while that Anya and her mother were the subjects of human experimentation—which in turn led to Anya developing her telepathic abilities. This seems to be confirmed by the hospital gowns worn by Anya and her mother in the dream. Nonetheless, details have always been quite sparse about her actual origins, and fans have never gotten a glimpse of her mother, either.

In Spy x Family chapters #109 and #110, even further exposition is given on the background of the series' apparently not-so-final boss: party chairman Donovan Desmond, father of Anya's own love interest, Damian. His wife, Melinda, confides in Loid her belief that Donovan was replaced by an alien, and that Donovan actually has the ability to read minds. It's a major development for Spy x Family's enemy number one, but it also teases a fascinating link with Anya's own telepathy and human experimentation. It seems that as Spy x Family reaches a surely climactic boiling point, one major exploration will be the unreal powers at play in the series.

One thing is for sure, though: the series' iconic identity is unwavering. Chapter #109 and #110, despite their suspense, played out with a comic levity; meanwhile, chapter #111 showcases Spy x Family's ability to dip into a terrifying origin story while encasing it in a heartwarming scene as Yor "reads Anya's mind" while suggesting au gratin for dinner. Even her telepathy, which was kept tightly under wraps, was revealed in Anya's endearing confession to Damian. Whatever happens next, it's certain that Spy x Family will handle it with heart.
