Summary

  • Love blossoms between unlikely pairs, like Martha and Henry, showing that true feelings can develop despite initial differences.
  • The Forger family exemplifies unlikely love and bonds, showcasing growth and affection even in unconventional circumstances.
  • Martha and Henry's story serves as a cautionary tale for Loid, Yor, and Anya to avoid missed chances and regrets by expressing their feelings.

Although Spy X Family’s Forger family began as a pure matter of convenience, over the days and months that they’ve been together, they’ve quietly grown into one of the closest and most wholesome in Ostania. However, they’ve been unable to tap into the mutual benefits generated by a happy and harmonious family vibe as a result of their unwillingness to acknowledge their developing feelings for each other.

There’s no doubt that a united Forger family would be a tremendous asset in facilitating the continuing peace between Ostania and Westalis. However, as Martha Marriott’s story from the last few chapters suggests, a failure to let those you love know that you love them can lead to a lifetime of regret and missed opportunities.

Spy x Family Chapter 98 Martha's tragedy undercutting comedy

As revealed in Spy x Family's most recent "Love and War" arc, after meeting Henry Henderson as an Eden Academy student, Martha eventually developed a crush on him. Those feelings eventually blossomed into love. However, despite numerous opportunities over their decades-long friendship to confess her love, Martha was either unable or unwilling to reveal her true feelings. Ultimately, when she finally dared to reveal her feelings for him, Henry was already married to another woman.

Spy X Family Proves Love Does Not Discriminate

Martha and Henry's Relationship Developed Despite the Barriers Against It

Although the circumstances of Martha's and Henry's relationship in Spy X Family differs significantly from that of the Forger family, they share two common threads. They both demonstrate how love can blossom between individuals who initially seem mismatched. Despite their disparate backgrounds and connections, both relationships transform, fostering love and connection between people who weren't naturally compatible at first.

Martha and Henry, both citizens of Ostania, hail from vastly different backgrounds. Henry, a member of the elite class, is introverted, progressive, and advocates for peace. In contrast, Martha, from the underclass, is outgoing, creative, and strongly nationalistic. Despite their differences, they found common ground and developed a love that bridged the gaps between their worlds.

Despite Their Differences, the Forgers Are the Model of Family

Loid and Yor Forger pretend to be a happily married couple in Spy x Family

As for the Forgers, no one could have been as incompatible as Loid, Yor, and Anya when they first came together as a family. This sketchy beginning didn't exactly set the stage for a healthy, long-lasting, and loving relationship. What's even more intriguing is that Anya is aware of Loid and Yor's secret identities, making her acutely aware that they're far from ideal parental figures. Despite these differences, no one can deny that the Forgers are one of the most wholesome families in manga and anime due to the growing care and affection they are building for one another.

Just like was the case with Martha and Henry, both situations illustrate the inability of people in the relationship to fully understand their feelings, and an unwillingness to unambiguously express them. In Loid and Yor’s case, there is an obvious mutual attraction that only seems to grow the longer their fake family scheme continues. However, both try their hardest to ignore it which, of course, creates an awkwardness that is hard to escape.

There is also the growing tenderness and intimacy that all the Forger family have found for one another. This is best illustrated in Anya and Yor's developing daughter-mother vibe. If either did not have true feelings for the other, it's unlikely that either would be so protective of the other as they are. There would be no need to risk one’s life or “cover” if one did not truly care for the other’s well-being.

Martha And Henry Offer the Forgers a Perfect Lesson in Unrequited Love

To Get Their Happy Ending, Loid and Yor Have To Avoid Martha and Henry's Mistakes

The problem, as Martha and Henry’s situation lay bare, is that Loid, Yor, and Anya’s inability to express their feelings to each other, promises that they will lose the chance to not only achieve their professional or personal goals but also enjoy the comfort of being part of a loving and ive family. While Loid and Yor are – in essence – enemies, their missions have similarities. Yor wants to protect her nation from those who would do it harm, and Loid wants to take out those who would perpetrate another war with Westalis. There’s no other way for both to achieve their “missions” than with the assistance of the other.

So, the lesson that fans can, and should, draw from Martha and Henry’s relationship is that it provides a roap to a happy ending for the series. If Loid, Yor, and Anya can avoid the same mistakes that Martha and Henry made, there is every reason to believe that they can achieve true happiness as a family. All that is needed is leaning into the love and tenderness that all three Forger family have shown throughout the Spy x Family saga.
