Warning: Contains spoilers for Spy x Family chapter #111.The most recent chapters of Spy x Family have done a great job of pushing the story forward. Between things like the great progress made between Anya and Damian, the stunning backstory of Henry Henderson, and a big reveal for Donovan Desmond that could change everything, the series has never had more forward momentum, making it the most exciting to read it’s been in years.

The latest Spy x Family reveals have all been great, and the latest chapter is no exception. Spy x Family chapter #111 was a notably short chapter at only 5 pages, so there wasn’t much to unpack, but even with that, Spy x Family chapter #111 was a big chapter for offering a major tease involving Anya’s biological family. Naturally, the full extent of what’s been revealed still isn’t clear, but with how big a moment it was, it’s the kind of thing that will hopefully spark a major development in the status quo as soon as possible.

Spy X Family’s Latest Chapter Hints At How Dark Anya’s Backstory Really Was

Everything We Just Learned About Anya's Backstory Explained

Spy x Family chapter #111 was just a short vignette centered around Anya, but there was still plenty to unpack. The first half was a dream of Anya’s where she ed something from before she was adopted by Loid, but rather than be a rare flashback to when she was experimented on by scientists, Spy x Family chapter #111 showed a brief moment of bliss between Anya and her biological mother. This was the first time Anya’s mother had been so much as referenced in years, and despite how brief it was, it was nonetheless great to see.

What was really noteworthy about chapter #111 was the dark implications of it all. The outfit Anya’s mother was wearing bears a clear resemblance to a hospital gown, not unlike what Anya has been shown wearing in flashbacks, and with her dialogue about wanting her and Anya to soar free like butterflies, Spy x Family chapter #111 implies that Anya’s mother was also experimented on by the people who gave Anya her telepathic powers. Whether that means she could also read minds is unknown, but overall, it makes her eventual death and Anya’s dark backstory all the more tragic.

Spy X Family’s Big Anya Reveal Makes Another Twist Even Better

How Spy X Family's Latest Twist Improves The Main Story

Donovan Desmond is revealed to be a mind reader

Spy x Family chapter #110 had a major reveal that Donovan Desmond is also a mind reader, but with that same chapter also calling attention to a surgical scar on Donovan’s head, he was undoubtedly given his powers later in life as opposed to being born with them. With the implication that scientists are surgically implanting psychic powers in people and Anya’s mother sporting a hospital gown, it all comes together to suggest that Anya’s mother was forcibly given psychic powers the same way Donovan Desmond was and Anya inherited them at birth.

With that connection in mind, the ultimate conflict with Donovan Desmond becomes even bigger than it already was. Anya’s personal relationship with Damian is one thing, but if Donovan is connected to the same psychic experiments that undoubtedly killed Anya’s mother, then the overarching conflict with Donovan Desmond is set to take on a cathartic bend as it allows Anya to settle things with the person who killed her mother. It all has the makings for an incredible climax, and hopefully, Spy x Family will continue to reveal more about Anya’s family to sell that even further.
