platformer SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake has received a new trailer, which includes gameplay footage and a release date for the title. The latest game starring the eponymous yellow sponge was first revealed by publisher THQ Nordic last year, with the plot revolving around SpongeBob and friends' interdimensional travels. These are sparked by dealings with a mysterious fortune-teller named Kassandra, a newly introduced character for the series.
A new trailer for the interdimensional platformer SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake has been released by THQ Nordic, with the game now confirmed to release on January 31 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The trailer details more about the title's plot, with SpongeBob lamenting that he and Patrick have used too much of the magic bubble soap bestowed upon them by Kassandra and destroyed Bikini Bottom. Players must travel to the worlds that match SpongeBob's costumes to retrieve lost friends, sending them home with a magic bubble wand. Pre-orders for The Cosmic Shake are also open, and include cosmetic bonuses for players to use in-game.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake Pre-Orders Include Costume DLC
Alongside the basic release of the game, a special BFF Edition of SpongeBob: Cosmic Shake features goodies like inflatable Patrick and a special Cosmic Victory statue. The BFF Edition will release at the same time as the regular game, and will retail for $249.99, while just the title itself will cost players $39.99. A special Costume DLC will come out alongside the game as well, retailing at $9.99, and players who pre-order the game or buy the BFF Edition will get the DLC at no charge.
SpongeBob SquarePants has a largely positive track record when it comes to video game releases, with titles like the remastered Batlle For Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated meeting positive reviews when it came out in 2020. Selling over a million copies, Battle For Bikini Bottom's remake success set the stage for more high-quality titles to come. Developer Purple Lamp, who lent its talents to the remake, is also on board for Cosmic Shake, and the studio has set the bar high for what it's capable of when it comes to the IP.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake seems poised to highlight some of the television show's most iconic moments and episodes, from SpongeBob and Patrick beginning the trailer in hats from Glove World to its prominent featuring of the prehistoric version of SpongeBob known as SpongeGar. Players will have to wait until next year to see if SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake lives up to the hype, but this new trailer has certainly shown a lot of promise.
