Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man as he fights foes from other universes (including Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, and Jamie Foxx's Electro), after one of Doctor Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) spells goes wrong. Spider-Man: No Way Home also features the initially heavily rumored, and now greatly celebrated, appearances from former Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Spider-Man: No Way Home's box office success has been astounding. This isn't necessarily surprising, since as soon as Marvel announced that characters from previous Spider-Man movies would be involved, it became clear that No Way Home was film that every fan wanted to see. With that said, few could have predicted just how big No Way Home's success would be. The film is well on it's way to overtaking James Cameron's sci-fi Avatar at the box office, which is the highest grossing film internationally of all time, and third domestically.
In a recent interview with BackstageOL, Holland sat down to discuss his new film Uncharted. It was during this interview that host Dave Morales mentioned No Way Home's staggering box office returns. It quickly became clear that Holland was not aware of just how far the film had come, stating that he thought the film was "a ways away from being the biggest film of all time." Morales then informed Holland that Spider-Man: No Way Home is only $20 million away domestically from the milestone, which Holland could only meet with a shocked stare. After confirming that what Morales said was true, Holland could only say, "holy sh*t." Watch the full video below:
It's important to note that the descriptor "biggest film of all time" is not entirely accurate. While Spider-Man: No Way Home has been a huge success, it is not quite set for this coveted title yet. The biggest film of all time internationally remains Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, followed by Avengers: Endgame and Avatar. With an additional $20 million in box office takings, the film will beat out Avatar in the US, but it has a while to go before it knocks Star Wars from the top spot globally. However, Holland still has plenty to be proud of in No Way Home's undoubtedly huge success, and ended his comments by saying that he could "talk for hours" about how grateful he is for the opportunity to be a part of the film.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has certainly been a cultural phenomenon and a landmark achievement for the MCU. The film managed to bring together fans of both the MCU and of previous Spider-Man franchises to share in a massive celebration of one of Marvel comics' most beloved and iconic superheroes. And it seems the film isn't done bringing people together yet, as the film's box office returns are still quickly climbing. It is very likely that Spider-Man: No Way Home will soon become the biggest movie of all time, and one can only imagine how Holland will react if or when this is officially the case.
