Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire not appearing in most-watched trailer in 24 hours, beating Avengers: Endgame.
There are a lot of things to be excited about Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film picks up after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home and deals with the fall out of Mysterio's (Jake Gyllenhaal) malicious dying confession. The revelation of Spider-Man's real identity and the claims that he's to blame for the death of Quentin Beck leaves Peter Parker miserable. It's also the perfect entry for Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to be involved. In of bad guys, Alfred Molina's Doc Ock may be the only one to physically appear in the trailer, but hints of Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin and Jamie Foxx's Electro were also peppered throughout the clip.
Arguably, however, the biggest talking point coming into Spider-Man: No Way Home is the potential appearances of Garfield and Maguire. Unfortunately, as exciting as this prospect is, it's a problem. The idea of previous iterations of the web-slinging hero could be involved in the MCU narrative is understandably thrilling. After all, despite their franchises' respective issues, their portrayals are mostly beloved. But this buzz surrounding his predecessors revisiting their old Marvel roles is taking away the focus from Holland's Peter Parker. The general discourse about the film has been about whether or not Maguire and Garfield are in the film; if they are, at what capacity they will be in it? The alleged leaked image of Garfield onset has also become a contentious topic — so much so that the actor was even asked about it.
ittedly, Spider-Man: Far From Home set up an entirely Sinister Six. But with Garfield and Maguire's more than likely appearance, chances are that the pre and post-release conversation will be about them instead of MCU Spider-Man.
What makes this more dangerous is that the ongoing conversations are generally building up on the idea that previous Spider-Men actors will be pivotal in the film. At this point, no one really knows what the extent of their involvement will be (if at all). So even if Spider-Man: No Way Home's story thematically works well in of Peter's arc in the MCU, there could be backlash or disappointment if Garfield and Maguire's cameos don't live up to the hype.
