There are few comics more iconic than Spider-Man (2002). But, what would happen if Spidey's final fight with Green Goblin was turned into an epic scene from the beloved Batman comic? Artist Hayden Sherman's latest piece brings both worlds together.
Batman: The Dark Knights Returns (1986) by Frank Miller and Klaus Johnson tells the story of an older Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement to return to Gotham. The uber-violent and gritty Batman tale is considered one of the greatest (if not the greatest) stories ever for the Caped Crusader. Meanwhile, Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man film is not only an incredibly entertaining movie, but it helped push the comic book movie genre forward. Without the film, there would be little chance superhero movies would have ever taken over the pop culture landscape as they currently do.
Sherman (Wasted Space) decided to put his own spin on the final fight between Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin. In the original scene, Green Goblin throws punch after punch as Spider-Man struggles to fight back against his biggest foe. Green Goblin mocks Spider-Man by telling him his selfishness has turned Mary Jane Watson's future death at his hands from quick and painless to nice and slow. As he thwarts his pronged weapon at the superhero, Spider-Man catches it before it kills him and proceeds to take down the Green Goblin with his web and bringing a wall down on him. Sherman recreated the fight in the style of Batman: The Dark Knights Returns and it's absolutely awesome - from casting the Green Goblin in shadow, to the look on Peter's face, to the general style, it makes you wish Spider-Man got its own Dark Knight-styled comic adaptation.
It's a brilliant piece of work by Sherman, who perfectly captures Miller's trademark style and the emotional beats from the final fight between Spider-Man and Green Goblin. Curious to how Sherman plotted the page? He posted the layouts for the page on his Twitter. Sherman said he had the layout done for years.
Sherman's work on the 'Spider-Man by way of the Dark Knight Returns' is absolutely superb. It perfectly brings the two tonally different worlds together in an amazing fashion. We recommend you check out more of Sherman's work on his Twitter and on his official website.
