Peter Parker's Spider-Man famously has the proportionate strength of a spider, allowing him to trade punches with some of Marvel's most powerful supervillains. However, even with this impressive strength, there are those who make Spider-Man look like a weakling. While Peter may be able to take punches from superstrong villains like Green Goblin and Kraven the Hunter, he's also responsible for protecting New York from far more formidable powerhouses.

Here are the 10 strongest supervillains in Spider-Man lore. We've limited the entries on this list to those Spider-Man has fought multiple times and who are still considered part of his lore - so while Peter has battled the Juggernaut before, he isn't eligible for consideration since he's far more connected to the X-Men.

Some of Spider-Man's villains have attempted redemption and their stories have made them temporary heroes, long-term heroes, or more likable villains.

10 Hippo, aka Mrs. Fluffy Lumpkins

Debuted in Dark Reign: Sinister Spider-Man #1 by Brian Reed and Chris Bachalo

A superstrong beast capable of hurling cars, Hippo is a hyper-evolved hippopotamus created by the High Evolutionary. The godlike scientist known as the High Evolutionary has a long history of creating 'New Men' - forcibly evolved animals who retain the most advantageous aspects of their original form. In the case of Hippo, that means his incredible strength and durability.

While Hippo is incredibly strong, he's not the most diabolical villain, mostly carrying out crimes to the immense amount of food he needs to eat. Hippo has fought Spider-Man several times, including as a member of the animal-themed supervillain team known as the Menagerie, where he worked alongside White Rabbit, Swarm and Man-Bull.

9 Stunner, aka Angelina Brancale

Unleashed in Amazing Spider-Man #397 by J.M. DeMatteis & Mark Bagley

Angelina Brancale is a villain who - when hooked up to advanced virtual reality technology - can manifest a superstrong digital avatar known as Stunner. Stunner possesses strength and durability superior to Spider-Man and can vanish from the scene of her crimes whenever Angelina disconnects from her VR tech. Stunner is obsessed with Doctor Octopus, who she credits with providing the tech that allows her to manifest her ideal self.

8 Mister Negative, aka Martin Li

First Seen in Free Comic Book Day 2007: The Amazing Spider-Man #1 by Dan Slott and Phil Jimenez

A major figure in New York's organized crime, Mister Negative exists in duality with the philanthropist Martin Li. Mister Negative has a range of powers, including his corrupting touch, which can turn anyone he touches into an evil reflection of their usual self, while also gifting them a powerful healing factor. He can also infuse weapons with negative energy and possesses superhuman strength, durability, and reaction speed.

Mister Negative prefers to have his followers the Inner Demons handle physical threats, but he's also immensely powerful by himself, hurling Spider-Man through a building with a one-handed blow in Amazing Spider-Man #621, from Dan Slott and Michael Lark. Negative implied this was a showcase of his maximum strength, however he didn't appear to experience any pronounced exertion, suggesting he could be capable of even greater feats.

7 Rhino, aka Aleksei Sytsevich

First Seen in Amazing Spider-Man #41 by Stan Lee & John Romita Sr.

One of Spider-Man's most underrated villains, Rhino is a former Mafia enforcer who wears a powerful carapace treated with gamma energy - the same power that created the Incredible Hulk. Indeed, when he's not battling Spider-Man, Rhino has held his own against the Hulk several times, with the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe stating that his strength allows him to lift at least 75 tons.

Rhino is also capable of running at over 70 miles per hour, allowing him to strike with incredible power, charging through buildings with little effort. Various enhancements have made him even stronger - for example, when he was enhanced by the anti-mutant Orchis group. While Rhino is famously one of Spider-Man's most dim-witted enemies, he's also a nihilist who - after losing his partner Oksana - has a death wish that makes him happy to perish if it means taking an opponent with him.

6 Sandman & Hydro-Man, aka William Baker & Morris Bench

First Seen in Amazing Spider-Man #4 by Stan Lee & Steve Ditko & Amazing Spider-Man #212 by Dennis O'Neil & John Romita Jr.

While Sandman and Hydro-Man have different powers in some ways, their strength is essentially the same. Both Hydro-Man and Sandman are able to transform into an elemental form which can grow larger and larger by collecting more of that material. In their initial forms, Sandman and Hydro-Man are human-sized and have superstrength comparable to Spider-Man's own. However, with more water/sand, they can grow to gigantic, skyscraper-sized forms, with a similar increase in strength. At their biggest, Sandman and Hydro-Man are essentially natural disasters.

5 The Tri-Sentinel

First Seen in Amazing Spider-Man #329 by David Michelinie and Erik Larsen

When the Asgardian god Loki used his magic to combine three experimental Sentinels into a single form, Spider-Man flew to the rescue, using his temporary powers as the new Captain Universe to blow it to pieces. However, with both advanced tech and mystic empowerment, the Tri-Sentinel can't be destroyed permanently, and has reassembled to track down Spider-Man multiple times since, with the cosmic hero Nova helping him destroy it on another occasion.

spider-man tri-sentinel spider-bot

In their most recent clash, Spider-Man was able to take control of the Tri-Sentinel, rebranding it as the Spider-Bot with a version of his mask spray-painted on one of its faces. Sentinels are designed to counter a variety of mutant powers, but their greatest weapon is their staggering strength, with the Tri-Sentinel being among the strongest ever built. The Tri-Sentinel also boasts metal tentacles, energy blasts and various gas-based weaponry.

4 Digger, aka the Vegas Thirteen

First Appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #51 by J. Michael Straczynski & John Romita Jr.

One of Spider-Man's weirdest villains, the superstrong mob enforcer Digger is actually 13 gangsters whose corpses were fused together by gamma energy (again, the semi-mystic energy that grants the Hulk his impossible strength.) Like most gamma mutates, Digger is among Marvel's strongest superhumans, being one of the few villains who can snap Spider-Man's webbing at will. Indeed, the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe states he can lift in excess of 100 tons.

Despite his power, Digger's body begins to degrade when the 13 personalities that make up his mind are in opposition, causing him to crumble when his constituent personas aren't aligned around a single goal. However, when Digger's personalities are unified, he's essentially impossible to kill or permanently destroy, both because of his Hulk-like durability and healing, and because he is technically a zombie who doesn't require biological functions.

3 Morlun

Debuted in Amazing Spider-Man #30 by J. Michael Straczynski & John Romita Jr.

Morlun is one of the Inheritors - a species of superhuman who hunt the multiverse for beings empowered with the mystic energy of animal totems, killing them and devouring their energy. Morlun pursued Spider-Man after sensing he was a Spider-Totem (aka a hero connected to the energies of the Spider-Verse), showcasing a level of strength that Peter Parker states is greater than the Hulk. Morlun is a near-unbeatable hunter - once he imprints on a Totem, he can track them anywhere in the world - and possesses speed, strength and durability in excess of 99% of superhumans.

Spider-Man's one advantage over Morlun was that his Totem energy was mixed with radioactivity, making his energy damaging to the predator. Sadly, it later emerged that the Inheritors resurrect their 'family ' via cloning if they ever fall, leading to later clashes between Spider-Man and Morlun, even after the villain's apparent death. Morlun even managed to kill Peter Parker, who was then resurrected by the mystic being known as the Other.

2 Regent, aka Augustus Roman

Amazing Spider-Man #1 by Dan Slott, Christos N. Gage and Paco Diaz

A CEO whose family were killed in the crossfire of a superhuman battle, Augustus Roman created a superhuman prison where he secretly studied the inmates, creating a suit of armor that could mimic their powers. Once he felt he had enough absorbed powers, Regent attacked Marvel's heroes, quickly siphoning the abilities of the Avengers, including Marvel's strongest man alive, the Superman-esque Hyperion. Thankfully, Spidey was able to defeat Regent by freeing his prisoners and thus depowering his suit.

Regent has reappeared many times since, but is most terrifying in the alternate reality of Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows. In this world where Peter Parker and Mary Jane remained married, Regent was totally successful in his mission to capture or kill Earth's superheroes, prompting Peter Parker to go into retirement, hiding his abilities. While Spider-Man, MJ and their daughter Annie eventually beat Regent, it was only after he'd fundamentally changed the world with his anti-superhero reign.

1 Gog

Appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #103 by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane

Gog is essentially Spider-Man's personal Godzilla - a gigantic kaiju who is actually an alien being who crash-landed on Earth. Gog is an animalistic being with no real agenda of its own, and is most often weaponized as muscle or a major distraction by other villains, including Doctor Octopus, who even included Gog in one version of his Sinister Six team. At his maximum size of 300 feet, Gog easily bested the Hulk, and is far stronger than any of Spider-Man's human villains.

While Gog is a major threat, Spider-Man later semi-redeemed the beast. In Amazing Spider-Man #43 by Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley, Gog was shrunken down using Pym Particles and temporarily taken in by Peter Parker as a monkey-like house pet. While the two eventually parted ways, Gog now seemingly sees Spider-Man as a friend rather than an enemy.
