Spelunky 2 is heading to Steam, and according to designer Derek Yu, it won't be too long after its PlayStation 4 release. Spelunky 2, sequel to the classic platformer Spelunky, is coming to PlayStation 4 on September 15th, having been significantly delayed from its planned release window last year.
Spelunky first released in 2008, and it's only grown in both popularity and content since then. The game is considered one of the delay Spelunky 2 received in 2019 was disheartening, but based on footage that has been released since, it looks like it will be worth the wait.
While the most recent release date news for Spelunky 2 came during a PlayStation event, Yu and his team have long intended to bring the series back to its roots with a PC release as well. To that end, Spelunky 2 officially has a Steam page, as announced by Derek Yu on his Twitter earlier today. No firm release date is provided, but Yu is encouraging fans to wishlist the game now so that they'll be notified when the title does come out. According to Yu, the game's PC release won't be more than a few weeks after it hits PS4.
Spelunky 2 getting a release on PC isn't news in and of itself. The game has been destined for Windows since it was first announced. But the addition of a Steam page adds an undeniable level of reality to the whole thing. The Steam page is there, complete with screenshots, promising at launch the online co-op that gave the game's progenitor such a resurgence. All that Spelunky 2 is missing is Spelunky 2 itself. Even though a release date still isn't available for PC fans, the assurance that it will follow soon after the PS4 release is definitely promising.
Fans have been very patient with the release of Spelunky 2, and it seems like Derek Yu is prepared to reward that patience. Spelunky 2 looks like a delight, filled with more characters, traps, items, enemies, and rideable turkeys than ever before. The first game helped define a genre of games that is still getting love to this day, with beloved titles like Enter the Gungeon. Spelunky 2 has quite the legacy to live up to. Fortunately for prospective prospectors, Derek Yu looks like he has just the turkey for the job.
Spelunky 2 will be available on PlayStation 4 on September 15th, 2020, and PC shortly after.
