Summary

  • Theo Rossi teases potential Sons of Anarchy reboot with Charlie Hunnam and former co-stars.
  • Speculations arise on how Jax Teller could return after his apparent death in series finale.
  • Charlie Hunnam has other Sons of Anarchy spinoff ideas, keeping details close to the chest.

Theo Rossi, who played biker Juice Ortiz in the hit series Sons of Anarchy, seemingly teased a new Sons of Anarchy reboot that will see him reunited with co-star Charlie Hunnam. Created by Kurt Sutter, Sons of Anarchy follows the criminal exploits of the titular outlaw motorcycle gang as they operate in a fictional town in California’s Central Valley. First airing in 2008, the series ran for seven seasons before finally wrapping up in 2014. The series also inspired a Sons of Anarchy spinoff, Mayans M.C., which also came to an end after its season 5 finale in July 2023.

During a discussion for the crime thriller Emily the Criminal, Rossi hinted at a potential project involving Hunnam and the rest of his former Sons of Anarchy co-stars. When asked about the Sons of Anarchy spinoff, Rossi shared: "There might be something coming up where we're all back together, which is insane... If it happens, it's wild, but if it doesn't it would be perfect and really cool because we also talk every day.” The new Sons of Anarchy project seems impossible, given all the characters who died, but there are still ways the characters could return.

The story of Jax Teller from Sons of Anarchy is fictional, but Charlie Hunnam based everything about the character on a real-life biker.

How Could Charlie Hunnam’s Jax Teller Return?

Jax Seemingly Died In The Sons Of Anarchy Finale

Following many of the story beats presented in the classic 17th-century play Hamlet, Hunnam’s Jax Teller was a tragic hero in the same vein as Shakespeare’s famous Danish prince. Motivated by his father's death and driven to evil deeds, Jax’s epic trajectory culminated in him sacrificing himself for the benefit of those around him. This connection was further reinforced by Sutter when he followed Jax’s death with a final flash of the Sons of Anarchy logo and a quote from the play itself.

The question that remains is how could Jax possibly make a triumphant return after the series finale suggested he rode his bike headfirst into an oncoming semi-trailer. While Jax’s body was never shown, and he may have faked his death, another option might be far more in keeping with the show’s Shakespearean roots. Sutter already expressed interest in a sequel series exploring Jax’s sons Abel and Thomas, with the boys learning more of their father via flashbacks or even ghostly visions would not be too far out of the question.

Given that Rossi’s character Juice was also killed during Sons of Anarchy season 7, his own return would also lend more credibility to such a theory. Either way, speculations arise as to what Hunnam has planned for his new Sons of Anarchy spinoff.

Charlie Hunnam Has Another Sons Of Anarchy Spinoff Idea

Hunnam Wants To Return To The Sons Of Anarchy Universe Without Jax Teller

While the cast has secretly been speaking about a Sons of Anarchy spinoff behind the scenes, Hunnam spoke about a totally different SAMCRO project back in 2022 (via Digital Fix). The actor revealed:

"There’s something in that universe that doesn’t involve Jax Teller, but does involve me that we’re sort of cooking up... But right now, it’s like we’re at the stage where the ingredients are just being measured out, they’re not even being mixed out in the bowl yet, and they’re definitely not in the oven.”

While the Sons of Anarchy spinoff seemingly doesn't involve Jax Teller, it could lead to something even bigger.

While Hunnam explained that the project was in the very early stages of development, that was over a year ago. Though the Hollywood strikes could have held back some progress, there must have been some significant headway with the Sons of Anarchy spinoff that Hunnam mentioned. Ultimately, while Mayans M.C. wrapped its final season, that doesn't mean the Sons of Anarchy universe is coming to an end. Based on the cast's comments, there are at least two different new Sons of Anarchy projects in the pipeline, even if the details are being kept close to the actors' chests.

While a Sons of Anarchy reboot would allow Charlie Hunnam to reprise his most beloved role to date, the actor has remained very busy since leaving the show. A year after Sons of Anarchy ended, Hunnam starred in Guillermo Del Toro's horror movie Crimson Peak and followed that up with a lead role in the adventure movie The Lost City of Z. Not all of Hunnam's projects have been successful though as his starring role in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword was a flop. However, it did ignite a collaboration with director Guy Ritchie which continued in The Gentlemen.

Hunnam has also appeared in ing roles in large ensembles, starring alongside Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, and Pedro Pascal in Triple Frontier as well as playing a secondary villainous role in Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire. While no Sons of Anarchy return has been confirmed, Hunnam will be returning to television in the series Criminal, based on the comic series by Ed Brubaker, which will also star Emilia Clarke, Luke Evans, and Adria Arjona.
