10 "Why Is That Incredibly Handsome Hedgehog Being Chased By A Man With A Mustache From The Civil War?"

Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)

In the first scene of the series, the audience sees Dr. Robotnik pursuing Sonic around San Francisco. Both of them appear as red or blue blurs, showing their speed. In a freeze frame, Sonic pauses in front of an explosion. He starts by saying, "So, I know what you're thinking…" and then leads into his iconic question.

Sonic the Hedgehog is available to stream on Netflix. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently streaming on Hulu.

This quote establishes the tone of the film well. It shows that Sonic thinks highly of himself, referring to himself in the freeze-frame and not much of Robotnik. It also clarifies for first-time viewers that Sonic is a hedgehog despite his color and anthropomorphic appearance. This narration then leads into a flashback from ten years ago, where Sonic explains his origin story and how he ended up on Earth.

9 "Where Am I? What Year Is It? Is The Rock President?"

Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)

After Sonic es out from an explosion, Tom insists that he can save the Hedgehog. Tom takes Sonic to see his girlfriend Maddie (Tika Sumpter), who is a vet. After examining the speedster, Maddie uses smelling salts to wake Sonic up. These revive him and give him an extra burst of energy, and Sonic flies around the kitchen in a streak of blue. When he finally stops, Sonic begins questioning how much time has ed since he was knocked out and where he is, saying, "Where am I? What year is it? Is The Rock president?"

The comedy is emphasized by his question of if the actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is president, since it suggests that Sonic has been living in his own comic reality.

These questions are in reference to the typical questions someone would be asked after a suspected head injury. Grounding questions like these, which establish the place, year, and social awareness, help to determine how severe the injury could be. Comically, Sonic asks these all himself, in rapid succession, suggesting that he is aware of the questions to ask but not his surroundings. The comedy is emphasized by his question of if the actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is president, since it suggests that Sonic has been living in his own comic reality.

8 "The World's Largest Rubber Band Ball! We Gotta See It!"

Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)

Sonic the Hedgehog after the rubberband ball museum

In Sonic and Tom's first bonding scene together, they talk in the car. They exchange some information about Sonic's origins. Midway through the conversation, Sonic looks out the window and notices a sign for the World's Largest Rubber Band Ball. He urges Tom to stop the car so they can see the ball, but Tom insists they stay focused.

While Tom keeps talking and trying to stay serious, Sonic disappears from the front seat and reappears a second later. When he returns to the car, he's holding mini rubber balls and merchandise. The rubber band ball scene is good for establishing the two characters' personalities. It shows Sonic's disobedience and naivety. It also demonstrates Tom's realism and importance to keeping Sonic grounded.

7 "Of Course Not, I Literally Just Met You"

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (2022)

Sonic and Tails in a dance battle in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

In Sonic and Tails' first interaction, Tails drives Sonic away from Knuckles, who chases them. Tails is very excited to meet Sonic, and his innocence shows in his fangirls over the conversation. Sonic is clearly distracted, thinking about Knuckles pursuing them. After Sonic cries out, "What is going on?!" Tails explains Knuckle's backstory and why he wants Sonic.

After some evasive driving maneuvers, Knuckles catches up to them. Tails comes up with a new idea to get rid of the Echidna and asks Sonic if he trusts him. Sonic, the realist in the situation, says, "Of course not. I literally just met you." Despite Sonic's protestations, Tails takes hold of the wheel and steers them off a cliff. In the air, Tails proves he is quick thinking and uses his flying powers to save Sonic.

6 "Dude, I'm Standing Right Here."

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (2024)

Sonic Knuckles and Tails looking ready for action in Sonic the Hedgehog 3

In the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer, when the trio confronts Shadow for the first time, they can't help but be impressed by his frightening stature. While Sonic insists they want the interaction to go peacefully, Knuckles is much more clear about his feelings. As they square up to fight, Knuckles says, "He is much more awesome than the hedgehog I fought previously," and he is unable to hold back how impressed he is.

On hearing Knuckles' comment, Sonic briefly loses his seriousness. He can't help but be offended, since he was the hedgehog Knuckles previously fought. Downcast, he exclaims, "Dude, I'm standing right here." Luckily, the hedgehog and echidna are friends now and have a much more comfortable relationship. They don't have long to discuss this before Shadow speaks, reminding them that he is their common enemy.

Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)

Sonic the Hedgehog with fish on his head

Tom initially hesitates to help Sonic, since he doesn't understand what Sonic needs or if he poses a threat. Tom asks Sonic to leave his car, hoping he's imagined their whole interaction and that the blue hedgehog isn't real. Sonic concedes and gets out of the car, though he is evidently still worried about finding San Francisco without Tom's help. Sonic runs off into the distance.

He shortly returns to Tom's car, now with a fish and kelp on his head. He says he went west as Tom directed, which led him into the Pacific Ocean. He gives Tom a hard time for leaving him alone, trying to convince him to change his mind. Sonic blames Tom for shooting him and stranding him on Earth, and tries to appeal to him. He asks for help getting to San Francisco, since he is not suited for navigating this planet alone.

4 "I Feel Just Like Vin Diesel! It's All About Family, Tom."

Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)

Sonic driving the car in sonic the hedgehog

In another scene in their car, Tom and Sonic have to escape Dr. Robotnik. When Tom realizes he'll need to help fend off Robotnik, he tells Sonic that he put the car in cruise control, making it easier for Sonic to drive. Sonic references Vin Diesel from The Fast and The Furious franchise as he gets behind the wheel. He tells Tom he feels like the actor, whose character is often in car chases.

His next line references family, a prominent theme in the franchise. He attempts to quote Diesel, saying, "It's all about family." Interestingly, Sonic knows this reference, considering he is from another planet. Scheming ways to defeat Robotnik, Sonic's driving skills leave much to be desired, yet they are still able to escape the evil doctor anyways.

3 "Return To Sender!"

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (2022)

Sonic the Hedgehog throwing the missle back

As Tails and Sonic explore a Siberian ice cave, following the map, Robotnik and Knuckles show up to stop them. While there is some creature-on-creature violence, Robotnik s in with some weapons. He fires a missile at Sonic and Tails, but they put up a good fight. Sonic is able to grab Robotnik's missile and change its trajectory.

The line only appears in the trailer, a quick quip to show Sonic's sass. In the film, Sonic says nothing but moves in slow motion during the stunt. The missing line does not detract from the rest of the humor in the film, and Sonic's fighting maneuver is still just as cool and effective as it destroys the ice cave and helps them escape.

2 "Turns Out, With Great Power Comes Great Power-Hungry Guys!"

Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)

Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog

In Sonic's initial voiceover, he explains his origins. The flashback show the owl Longclaw raising Sonic on a beautiful island. Though he could use his super speed wherever, he was initially instructed to keep his powers hidden. Obviously, Sonic breaks these rules, claiming he's too fast to be seen.

The quote is a spoof on Spider-Man's motto: "With great power comes great responsibility."

However, Sonic is quickly proven wrong. While inside the home talking to Longclaw, the Echidnas are spotted outside, wielding weapons. Sonic claims that they are power-hungry and envious of his superpowers. Sonic turns a serious and dangerous enemy attack into a light and comical quip.

1 "This is MY power, and I'm not using it to run away anymore! I'm using it to protect my friends!"

Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)

Sonic the Hedgehog with blue energy around him from the Sonic the Hedgehog movies

The first film concludes with a final battle between Sonic and Robotnik. After talking to Tom, Sonic finally accepts that he has earth friends for whom he is worth fighting. As he regains his energy from Robotnik, Sonic gains self-confidence. He's not battling on his own behalf anymore. Sonic decides he wants to save his human friends.

This line is an important and appropriate ending for the first Sonic film. It shows that Sonic has learned to appreciate those around him and care for others. It also sets up the later movies, since there is now an established reason why Sonic would want to stay on Earth. Though it is one of his less funny lines, the line still establishes essential character development for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
