Almost every game these days has some form of a fishing minigame in it, including the new Sonic Frontiers. The current fascination with fishing in video games is a pleasant distraction within many of them, and many players have been happy to see it appear in everything from Animal Crossing and World of Warcraft to Red Dead Redemption 2. Now, in Sonic Frontiers, SEGA's Blue Blur even takes his time waiting for a fish to bite alongside Big the Cat.

The open-world gameplay of Sonic Frontiers caught the attention of many fans early on. As Sonic is able to travel the land and explore, it makes perfect sense that a fishing minigame would fit nicely in this world. Fishing also happens to be a clever means of unlocking fast travel in the game, as players have a chance to catch a Koco Scroll which allows them to travel to other areas. Big the Cat makes his grand return to the Sonic series in order to encourage Sonic to do some fishing for him, and can provide some good rewards in exchange.

Sonic Frontiers' Fishing Is The Perfect Way To Relax

Fishing with Big the Cat in Sonic Frontiers

In addition to simply being a fun minigame, fishing with Big in Sonic Frontiers also offers many rewards for the player. Everything that Sonic catches is worth tokens which can then be exchanged for items, some of which can be very useful. However, in order to fish, Sonic has to pay Big purple coins.

The coins that Big the Cat is after in Sonic Frontiers are hidden throughout the world, which means that a player can't simply plan on fishing forever, no matter how much they may enjoy the minigame. It is a fun quest to look for them, however, and makes it that much more rewarding once they're uncovered. It's also a great excuse to explore more of the game's open world, which can be done at a more relaxing pace compared to previous Sonic titles.

Fishing in video games is a fun optional addition so it's great to see the feature becoming more prevalent. Open-world adventures like Sonic Frontiers are the perfect environments for this mechanic, and being able to use it to purchase useful items and even a means of fast travel is brilliant. Besides, it's good for everyone - blue hedgehogs included - to slow down and appreciate a nice serene moment with a friendly cat every now and then.
