Even mad scientists need to be loved, and Dr. Ivo Robotnik, or Eggman, as he is more commonly known these days, has been Sonic’s maniacal arch-nemesis for as long as the Sonic franchise has been around, having made his debut alongside Sega’s hyperactive mascot in the original Sonic The Hedgehog game back in 1991.

Although the English instruction to 2003’s Sonic Heroes once described Dr. Eggman as “a romanticist, a feminist, and a self-professed gentleman,” the evil genius with a penchant for trapping cute woodland creatures inside robotic death machines hasn’t exactly shown an interest in dating during his many battles against Sonic and his colorful cast of allies. Throughout most of the games in the prolific platforming franchise, Eggman has shown more of an interest in building giant robots, some of which are immortalized in Sonic the Hedgehog action figures. However, Dr. Eggaman has now put himself out on the dating market, and he’s opening up about some very strange phobias along the way.

Earlier today, the official Sonic The Hedgehog Twitter posted a couple of humorous parody images of Dr. Eggman’s “UnHinged” dating profile, which is a play on the real-life dating app Hinge. This profile lists several known stats about the not-so-good doctor, such as his previously established IQ of 3000, his self-proclaimed title as “The Ruler of the Eggman Empire,” and the fact that his archenemy is a talking hedgehog (which he promises to explain to his prospective date later). The profile also lists his height at 6’1’’, notes that he enjoys long walks on the beach (and plotting world domination), and states that his irrational fear is “shoelaces.” Incidentally, none of Eggman’s character designs have had shoelaces on their boots, which may be due to the doctor’s apparent fear of them.

Sonic The Hedgehog’s social media presence has been home to plenty of bizarre and entertaining antics, with Sonic and his friends often taking over Twitter to answer fan questions or celebrate the latest Sonic game release like September’s Sonic Colors Ultimate. Back in June, Sega revealed that Sonic himself would branch out as a VTuber, with his first livestream taking place at the end of that month.

Dr. Eggman’s dating profile is every bit as strange as the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise's various other social media hijinks, but it does provide an interesting look into the lesser-explored aspects of the iconic gaming villain - including his irrational fear of shoelaces. That fear might be some useful information for Sonic to use in his inevitable next encounter with his greatest enemy.
