SNK Vs. Capcom: Cardfighters’ Clash is now available on the Nintendo Switch but it’s not the game many might expect it to be. The SNK Vs Capcom crossover series first began way back in 1999 with the release of SNK Vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium and SNK Vs. Capcom: Cardfighters’ Clash on the Neo Geo Pocket. Since then, several other titles under the series have been released on different platforms. Just last year, SNK Vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium was ported to the Nintendo Switch and PC.

It’s been over 15 years since the last brand-new SNK Vs Capcom game was released, as both companies have stated that there would no longer be any crossover titles between the two. However, both companies have collaborated with other titles and franchises to feature their characters. Most notably, characters from SNK and Capcom franchises have been featured in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate either as a playable character, spirit, or as Mii Fighter costumes. Even though the massively popular crossover fighting game from Nintendo has officially released its last DLC character with Kingdom Hearts’ Sora, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still holding events to showcase its other characters such as the Street Fighter 35th Anniversary Event.

SNK Corporation has just released SNK Vs Capcom: Card Fighters’ Clash on the Nintendo eShop, priced at $7.99, announcing the surprise launch with a trailer from SNK Official. Unlike most SNK Vs Capcom series titles, most of which are fighting games, Card Fighters’ Clash is a digital collectible card game with a total of 300 cards featuring both SNK and Capcom character cards as well as action cards. While the game’s original release on the Neo Geo Pocket was split into two games, an SNK and a Capcom version, this new release combines not only both games into one package but also their respective English and Japanese releases. This effectively gives those who purchase the Switch release a total of four games, each with their own independent save files. Players can also trade cards and do battle between the game’s SNK and Capcom versions, although it’s limited to either the Japanese or English versions.

SNK Vs Capcom: Card Fighters’ Clash plays similarly to other collectible card games such as Magic: The Gathering wherein players summon up to three fighters to the field and use them to attack the opposing player’s character cards or the player themself. The action cards can also be used for additional effects or combos by using Special Points generated when characters are placed on the field.

Those who were able to play the original releases of SNK Vs Capcom: Card Fighters’ Clash on the Neo Geo Pocket will now be able to relive their youth with this new release. With four of the game’s versions included in the package, players will easily be able to try out different decks and combos with ease thanks to the new yet surprising Nintendo Switch game release.
