Slayers: A Buffyverse Story season 2 receives a disappointing update from Christopher Golden. Golden co-wrote the audio series with original Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast member Amber Benson. Slayers is an Audible original series set in the Buffy universe 10 years after the series finale and features many returning cast including Benson, Charisma Carpenter, James Marsters, Emma Caulfield, Anthony Head, and Juliet Landau.

As Slayers season 2 is not moving forward. According to the writer, “Disney has refused to let Audible proceed with future seasons.”

Golden also noted that, to his knowledge, “no explanation” has been given as to the reason for the cancellation of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. Golden wrote that bringing Slayers to life “has been one of the happiest experiences of [his] career” saying that he is “sorry [they] won't be able to continue on, but [he is] so glad [they] were able to bring these characters back to you.

What Does The Cancellation Of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story Mean for a Buffy Revival?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer had seven seasons and originally ran from 1997 to 2003. The show was popular during its run, but has amassed even more popularity as a burgeoning cult classic in the years since its conclusion. Because of this staying power, the prospect of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot or revival has been floated over the years.

Slayers: A Buffyverse Story was a smash-hit for Audible in 2023. While an audio story may not connect as much to the average viewer as would a televised tale, it is still another way to get back into the Buffy universe and acts as a sequel series with so many original cast returning. This calls into question whether more Buffy content will be made in the future.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's new Audible series will bring back some of the show's original cast, and could be redemptive for the show's legacy.

There is a chance that Disney is pulling Slayers because of bigger plans they have with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. If a revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the cards, Disney may want to consolidate Buffy stories to fewer mediums. For now, Buffy stories will continue in comic books unless Slayers: A Buffyverse Story can overcome cancellation.

Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is available exclusively on Audible.
