Attendees at Star Wars Celebration 2023 were thrilled to see first footage from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which promises to continue expanding the Mandoverse. The Star Wars franchise has always been known for hopping around the timeline, and the Disney era is no different. The last few years have seen a whole new time period open up, in the first few years after George Lucas' original trilogy. Lucasfilm began exploring this era in The Mandalorian, with a spinoff The Book of Boba Fett. That proved to be something of a false part for an initiative sometimes being referred to as the Mandoverse, but at Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm revealed more about their plans.Created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will star Jude Law; the Disney+ TV show will apparently tell the story of a group of children lost in space. Attendees at Star Wars Celebration 2023 were given a first look at the show, and Screen Rant was in attendance. Here's a full description of the footage, along with some additional information from the showcase:The Skeleton Crew trailer opens on a planet that is deliberately designed to look like Earth. A group of children is shown being taught by a droid teacher. After school, it appears that they've snuck out, and they can be seen on a spaceship flying across a moon. The children's parents are then shown meeting knowing that their offspring are missing. Another shot shows a holo message being received, telling the kids not to give up. The Skeleton Crew footage also included a lot of new aliens and a very sinister new droid. It all builds up to the introduction of Jude Law's character, with the kids saying, "You're a Jedi," as he pulls down his hood.
Skeleton Crew Is Finally Establishing Itself In The Star Wars Universe
There have been many unknowns surrounding Star Wars: Skeleton Crew since its announcement, but the trailer highlights the core elements of what the show will be about. The new footage finally reveals Law's character as a Jedi, meaning he's likely a survivor of Order 66 during the rise of the Empire. Since the series is set up as a coming-of-age story while Law tries to rescue the children, there's a strong chance he will become a mentor figure for the group.
Given the show's placement in the timeline near The Mandalorian and its associated shows, there's a fair chance that the series will also feature cameos by familiar faces. Executive producer Dave Filoni previously teased that new Star Wars series would see more familiar faces from across the galaxy. If that's the case, then despite being a smaller journey in the Star Wars universe, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew could be harboring a few unexpected surprises.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew also has a massive pool of talent behind it, including directors like Everything Everywhere All at Once's Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. With so much mystery still surrounding the show, there's still plenty to speculate regarding where it's going to take the audience. More is likely to be revealed in the time leading up to Star Wars: Skeleton Crew's release later this year, but for now, the show is keeping some mysteries about what to expect under wraps.
