A fan has created a simple but very impressive Silent Hill 2 remake customization for their RG35XXSP handheld, and it's a brilliant showpiece. Silent Hill 2 follows the story of James Sunderland after he gets a letter from his supposedly deceased wife named Mary, telling him that she is waiting in the titular town for him. Along James's journey, he can save his progress at red squares, which show James looking directly at the player (most of the time), and a fan has taken that idea and created it in real life.
Warning: the following article contains major spoilers for both Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 2 remake.
Over on Reddit, Wizelll has posted images of their customized RG35XXSP, and it features James staring at the holder on the front, just like the save point red square scenes from the game. On the back, the device has the popular "There was a hole here. It's gone now" line from both the remake and original game. The 's RG35XXSP device itself is red, so Wizelll says they just printed off images and stuck them in the handheld's shell. The result is an easy and straightforward but entirely transformative customization.
The Perfect Silent Hill Console
The Red Squares Are More Than Just Save Points
Mechanically, the red squares are used as save points. However, they, along with pretty much everything else in SH2 and its remake, have a much deeper meaning. When James first finds a red square, he says,"Looking at this makes me feel like someone's groping around inside my skull..." The red squares do not get acknowledged again until near the end of the game. After the revelation that James killed Mary, a group of nine squares can be found before the next-to-last boss fight, and is the final save location of the game.

One Month After Release, Silent Hill 2 Remake's Biggest Mystery Solved By Dedicated Fan
A month after its release, a dedicated Silent Hill 2 Remake fan stuns the community by figuring out the code to the game's biggest mystery.
It's at this final point of the game that the red squares start to have more story impact than just being save points. The final group of nine save points represents the nine delusions he encountered on his journey: Red Pyramid Thing (aka Pyramid Head), Maria, Lying Figure, Mandarin, Bubble Head Nurse, Mannequin, Abstract Daddy, Flesh Lips, and then Mary herself. When using this final save point, James no longer looks directly at the player, looking away out of shame and fear of judgment, before entering the next room to confront Red Pyramid Thing.
Custom Consoles Continue To Impress
There's A Lot Of Room For Creativity And Personalization
Having the ability to make a console feel like your own, whether that's through custom faceplates, or something as simple as this new SH2 customization, creates a lot of personalization and attachment to the device. We often see official releases of custom consoles, and there are some custom consoles we wish we could buy that either don't exist, have limited quantities, or the device is difficult to customize independently.
Still, custom consoles continue to amaze fans, especially ones like this, which are about as simple as you can get when customizing a console. Silent Hill 2 remake arguably got even more horrific in some areas than the original game, so ionate fans are loving that the series appears to be back on people's radars, after more than a decade away, and even months post-release, there is a lot of life in this game's community.
