The Residence features an excellent cast of familiar faces whose bold, entertaining performances really sell the unique tone of this show.

The Residence has some great plot twists that audiences will struggle to see coming, but there’s just as much comedy as drama in this bitesize series. Just when the hilarious performances and sharp writing lull the audience into a false sense of security, that’s what The Residence’s biggest twists and surprises take the viewer unawares. It’s a great way to tell this story, with a very quirky tone that’s reminiscent of some other murder mysteries from recent years.

5 The Afterparty (2022 - 2024)

The Afterparty is an anthology crime comedy from the minds of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the filmmakers behind projects such as 21 Jump Street and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. The show follows a group of old friends who reconnect after a brutal murder at their high school reunion, with each character trying to any clues that could lead them to uncover the culprit. The Afterparty has an excellent blend of comedy and drama that will certainly please fans of The Residence, but it’s the strong character work that really makes it easy for audiences to get sucked into this story.

4 Based On A True Story (2023 - Present)

Starring Kaley Cuoco & Tom Bateman

True crime is taking the world by storm, and Based on a True Story puts our obsession with grizzly real-life killings under the microscope in a hilariously dark way. The show follows an eccentric bunch of characters who decide to capitalize on America’s love for true crime by hosting their own podcast on the subject, but things quickly get out of hand as they fall deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole. While some episodes are a little slow, Based on a True Story has an excellent ending that rewards the viewer’s patience with plenty of unpredictable twists and shocking reveals.

3 A Murder At The End Of The World (2023)

While A Murder at the End of the World lacks the comedy that makes many of these shows stand out from the crowd, it makes up for that with plenty of dark subplots and unsolvable mysteries that keep the audience guessing until the very end. The story follows a young woman named Darby Hart who visits an elusive billionaire’s remote retreat and quickly takes it upon herself to solve the brutal murder that takes place. It’s one of the most unpredictable murder mysteries in recent memory, and Emma Corrin and Harris Dickinson’s bold performances are worth watching it for alone.

2 Only Murders In The Building (2021 - Present)

Over the past four seasons, Only Murders in the Building has proven itself to be among the most innovative and creative murder mysteries in a long time. This crime comedy follows three strangers who come together in the wake of a brutal murder in their apartment complex, employing their sleuthing talents to solve the mystery and bring the killer to justice.
