the rights to Sherlock Holmes has allowed several adaptations of the character and his cases to all types of media for decades, with many of them making changes and additions to give them a fresh spin. Among those is the BBC’s Sherlock, created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat.

Sherlock brought the Great Detective, his stories, and accompanying characters to modern-day London, adapting his cases to current technology, social issues, and more. Sherlock started strong with its first two seasons, but after season 2’s finale, “The Reichenbach Fall”, the show’s quality declined. Sherlock season 4 was the show’s weakest and most controversial season, and the series’ ending was confusing and frustrating, but the show in general left some questions that, if season 5 were to happen, could finally be answered there.

7 What Happened To Irene Adler After “A Scandal In Belgravia”

Irene Adler Only Made A One-Episode Appearance

One of the most notable and intriguing characters in Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories is Irene Adler, whom Holmes referred to as “the Woman.” Irene Adler only appeared in one story, and she’s notable for outsmarting Holmes and escaping, earning the detective’s respect, which is why he refers to her as “the Woman.” In Sherlock, Irene (Lara Pulver) also appeared once, in the season 2 episode “A Scandal in Belgravia”, but instead of being a former opera singer and actress, she was a dominatrix.

Why Sherlock Made Major Changes To Irene Adler (From The Book Version)

BBC's Sherlock featured Irene Adler, a character from Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books, but the show made major changes to her.

Irene took photos of her clients during her job to protect herself, but that got her into trouble with the British government. Irene was also involved with Moriarty and, despite her intelligence, charm, and other skills, she avoided Sherlock and Mycroft’s (Gatiss) people, but she couldn’t get away from those coming after her once her protection was gone. However, Sherlock saved her when she was to be beheaded by extremists in Karachi, and helped her fake her death.

Irene Adler didn’t appear again in the rest of Sherlock, except in mental images, but she was mentioned a couple of times in other episodes. Given that powerful and dangerous people were after Irene, Sherlock would have had to come up with a very good and elaborate plan for her to escape safely, and the details of it, along with her possible whereabouts, could be revealed in a fifth season.

6 What Happened To Molly & Her Relationship With Sherlock

Molly & Sherlock’s Final Phone Call Was Intense

One of the characters exclusive to Sherlock is Molly Hooper (Louise Brealey), who worked in the morgue at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, and thus often worked with Sherlock. Molly had a crush on Sherlock and would often get nervous around him, with the detective taking advantage of her attention and skills, but completely unaware of her attraction to him. Molly helped Sherlock fake his death in the season 2 finale, and in season 3’s premiere episode, Sherlock confessed to her that she mattered a lot to him.

Sherlock Completely Failed Molly Hooper

Sherlock introduced viewers to Molly Hooper, who even though was key in some of the show's most important moments, the writers completely failed her.

Due to her connection to Sherlock, Molly was targeted by his sister, Eurus (Sian Brooke), who supposedly planted a bomb in her apartment. The only way to save Molly was if Sherlock called her and got her to say “I love you”, but without revealing to her that she was in danger (as were he, John, and Mycroft). Sherlock ended up saying “I love you” to Molly twice so she would finally say it, and he saved her. However, it’s unknown what happened between them after that call, if Sherlock told her the truth, and if their dynamic changed at all.

5 How Sherlock & Moriarty Met

Sherlock & Moriarty Met Before The Events Of The Show

Of course, Sherlock featured Holmes’ famous archenemy from the books, Moriarty, but with a couple of changes. In the books, Moriarty’s intelligence is on par with Holmes’, which made him one of the most interesting and memorable characters from Conan Doyle’s stories despite his brief appearance. In Sherlock, Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) was given a bigger role in the story, presented as a consulting criminal, opposite to Sherlock’s role as a consulting detective. Moriarty debuted in season 1’s finale and became the main villain of season 2.

Sherlock realized there was a way out as long as Moriarty was alive… so Moriarty killed himself in front of Sherlock.

Moriarty was charming, calculating, an excellent actor, and unbelievably manipulative, but he was also unpredictable. In “The Reichenbach Fall”, Moriarty planned to push Sherlock into killing himself, but Sherlock realized there was a way out as long as Moriarty was alive… so Moriarty killed himself in front of Sherlock, leaving him no way out. However, Moriarty’s presence was still felt throughout the rest of the series.

Moriarty continued to appear in flashbacks, hallucinations, “mind palace” projections, and videos, and in the series finale, it was revealed that he met Eurus. What Sherlock never mentioned or showed was how Sherlock and Moriarty met, how many times they had crossed paths before, and everything about their history together before the events of the show.

4 What Did Eurus & Moriarty Talk About

Two Criminal Minds, A 5-Minute Conversation

As mentioned above, Moriarty met Eurus when both were granted an unsupervised five-minute conversation. Sherlock’s final episode revealed that this conversation was enlightening and even life-changing for both, but the details of it weren’t revealed. It’s also unclear if this conversation had any impact on her elaborate games and traps in “The Final Problem” and on Moriarty’s plans against Sherlock, more so as it’s unclear exactly when that conversation took place. If it was so life-changing, it should be mentioned in a fifth season.

3 Everything About Eurus’ Plan

Eurus’ Plan Made No Sense

Speaking of Eurus, her introduction raised more questions and left more mysteries than answers. After not being mentioned or hinted at in the first seasons, Eurus debuted in Sherlock season 4 disguised as a potential new romantic interest for John and as his therapist, but her link to the Holmes family was revealed in the series finale. Eurus was introduced as a dangerous criminal mastermind, even more intelligent and skilled than her famous brother. Eurus manipulated everyone at the maximum-security psychiatric prison she was in, which is why she could leave whenever she wanted and how she turned the place into a trap.

Sherlock, Mycroft, or Eurus: Who The Most Intelligent Holmes Sibling Is

Sherlock introduced a third Holmes sibling named Eurus, who was an evil genius – but who is the smartest Holmes sibling? Let's take a look.

However, her traps and games were too confusing for a show that had mostly aimed for realistic cases and stories. As manipulative and persuasive as Eurus could be, having an entire maximum security prison at her mercy was excessive and hard to believe, and the logistics of her plan made no sense. Sherlock breaking down his sister’s plan would be interesting, and hopefully, he could answer how she did all that.

2 What's Eurus & Sherlock's Relationship Like Now

Could Eurus & Sherlock Team Up Someday?

Sherlock season 4 finale Eurus Holmes holding her violin

Eurus was responsible for one of the most traumatic chapters in Sherlock’s childhood, and given her status as a highly dangerous criminal, it was understandable that he never spoke about her. However, at the end of the series and after reasoning with her by connecting emotionally with her (which was a big accomplishment for both), it was revealed that Eurus was taken back to that same prison (though whether the same staff that freed her whenever she wanted stayed or not is unknown).

Eurus could be an ally of Sherlock in his cases, but it’s unclear what has changed in Eurus and Sherlock’s relationship since “The Final Problem.”

Eurus chose not to speak to anyone anymore, and Sherlock, who started visiting her, played the violin for her, with her ing him in playing. Given her intelligence and more, Eurus could be an ally of Sherlock in his cases, but it’s unclear what has changed in Eurus and Sherlock’s relationship since “The Final Problem.” Sherlock season 5 could reveal if he still visits Eurus and if they have teamed up at some point.

1 How Exactly Sherlock Faked His Death In "The Reichenbach Fall"

Sherlock’s Biggest Mystery Is About His Fake Death

Perhaps the biggest question Sherlock left is how Holmes faked his death in the season 2 finale. As mentioned above, Moriarty pushed Sherlock into killing himself by shooting himself in front of him. Sherlock then called John and made him watch him jump off the roof of St. Bart’s Hospital, with John checking his pulse to confirm his friend had died. However, right at the end of the episode, Sherlock was revealed to be alive, and so speculation about how he faked his death began.

Season 3’s premiere episode used some fan theories and incorporated them into the story, but in a way that felt disrespectful to the audience.

Because of this, the anticipation for Sherlock season 3 was high, as viewers expected an explanation, but that never happened. Instead, season 3’s premiere episode used some fan theories and incorporated them into the story, but in a way that felt disrespectful to the audience. Ultimately, Sherlock never properly explained how exactly he faked his death, but season 5 could finally provide all those answers.
