Summary

  • Sexy horror movies have been around since the early days of cinema, pushing boundaries with carnality and carnage.
  • The best sexy horror movies blend sensuality and shock, using sex and desire as a source of horror.
  • From strange intimate encounters to erotic tension, these movies deliver on both scare factor and suggestive content.

Despite the genre's focus on the morbid, macabre, and menacing, there are dozens of sexy Nosferatu, horror has always pushed boundaries with carnality just as much as carnage. Some of the first non-adult movies to include nudity were horror films, and to this day sexy horror movies continue to capture viewers' imaginations.

The combination of sex and terror is a tried and true classic, and the best sexy horror movies manage to be as sensuous as they are shocking. Some make sex or sexuality part of the terror, while others manage to be good sexy horror films without a monster or villain that's thematically tied to pleasures of the flesh. There's no universal blueprint either, as some are simply raunchy yet outstanding scary films, while others become truly terrifying by using sex and desire as the source of horror. However, the best sexy horror movies do a little bit of both, and include both box-office hits and hidden gems from across almost every decade.

15 The Untamed (2016)

A Cannes Silver Lion Winner About An Addictive Sexual Alien

Alejandra and Verónica holding hands at a kitchen table in The Untamed.

Director Amat Escalante's The Untamed is one of the best Spanish-language horror movies of the last few years, and is truly disturbing for the way it explores repressed sexuality and forbidden desires. This sexy horror movie has many erotic scenes, though they are some of the strangest intimate encounters ever put to screen. The Untamed follows Alejandra (Ruth Ramos), a bored and sexually frustrated wife, and Verónica (Simone Bucio), a young woman who becomes obsessed with a tentacled alien creature who can satisfy her sexual desires.

The crash-landed alien becomes increasingly violent and dangerous, but despite this, the women become addicted to its touch, which leads to fatal consequences. The Untamed doesn't shy away when depicting the encounters between the creature and Alejandra, Verónica, or other characters, but the fact it's so unflinching makes it a tense watch and among the best sexy horror movies that delivers just as much on the scare factor as it does on the suggestive content.

14 An American Werewolf In London (1981)

The Werewolf Classic Dripping With Masculine Eroticism

An American Werewolf In London
R

Release Date
August 21, 1981
Runtime
97 minutes
Director
John Landis

An American Werewolf in London is a cult classic, and the prosthetics and practical effects of the creature are inherently unappealing to the eye, it is ranked among the best sexy horror movies, although is one of the few that isn't included because of traditional feminine sexuality. Instead, the John Landis classic has become, much like Top Gun and other 1980s action movies, a movie that's renowned for having plenty of distinctly masculine erotic undertones (although it has a considerable dose of female nudity too).

The gothic ambiance and the rich, detailed London aesthetic are the perfect foundation for an oddly sensual and seductive movie. David Naughton and Jenny Agutter's chemistry is incredible, and there's romantic tension that could be cut with a knife. While the shower scene in Psycho is easily the most iconic movie shower scene, An American Werewolf in London also features a memorable raunchy shower sequence of its own too — although for very different reasons.

An American Werewolf In London is available to stream on AMC+.

13 The Witches Of Eastwick (1987)

Hollywood Legend Jack Nicholson Leads An Erotically Charged Horror Classic

Jack Nicholson reclines on a bed from The Witches of Eastwick

The Witches of Eastwick is one of the sexiest horror movies of the 1980s. The three titular witches (Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfieffer) discover their supernatural abilities for the first time, which results in them accidentally conjuring the jokingly named Daryl Van Horne (Jack Nicholson), a seductive and charming man who's just as devilish. He fulfills all the women's desires, but that leads to mass destruction. The Witches of Eastwick has a quintessential '80s cast, which makes the movie endlessly entertaining, and it fully leans into its raunchiness.

The plot of The Witches of Eastwick revolves around Daryl trying to impregnate the witches, which of course means many sequences of him seducing them, and the intimacy that follows. Jack Nicholson's smooth delivery and traditionally rugged aesthetic and demeanour of course give the erotic moments of this sexy horror movie a distinct feel. As for the horror elements, the true extent of Daryl's plan leads to some immensely memorable visuals, including monstrous transformations and plenty of violent murders.

Above all else, 1973's Don't Look Now is a horror movie about grief, as it follows John and Laura Baxter (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) as they move to Venice to mourn the death of their young daughter. The movie takes a turn for the worst when two sisters claim they communicated with the child's spirit, and all hell breaks loose.

Among the emotionally exhausting, grueling narrative are moments of extremely ionate scenes between John and Laura. The scenes are undoubtedly erotic, but they aren't exploitative, as they heighten the emotional stakes, and the characters' desires wildly contrast with their fears, which are just as heavily depicted. This sexy horror movie uses eroticism to highlight its key themes in ways few have managed to match. Even if it isn't the scariest among the sexiest horror films, it's certainly one of the most emotionally deep.

11 Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Stanley Kubrick's Final Film Was A Sex-Filled Horror

Eyes Wide Shut

Release Date
July 16, 1999
Runtime
159 minutes
Director
Stanley Kubrick

Stanley Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut, stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman at the height of their fame and uses the then-real-life couple's relationship to extraordinary effect in this erotic thriller. The plot revolves around a couple in a struggling relationship who are not completely honest with themselves or each other when it comes to their sexual proclivities.

The couple is dragged into an underground world of sex and secrecy and becomes part of an underground society dedicated to masked orgies. This begins to reveal an even more sinister underbelly, and mystery, thrills, and sex to form one of the sexiest horror movies. Kubrick considered Eyes Wide Shut one of his greatest works, and it stands out both as a film generally as well as as a horror movie that's rich with erotic themes.

Eyes Wide Shut is available to stream on Paramount+.

David Cronenberg is the master of body horror and one of the key films in the genre is Videodrome. The film stars James Woods and involves virtual pornography and rapidly growing tumors, and the video cassette "Videodrome" is causing it all. The main characters are either working in or adjacent to pornography and themes of sadomasochism permeate the film as people are titillated and then hypnotized by Videodrome.

The end of the film caps off the sexual themes, as the killer cassette only affects those whose curiosity is piqued enough to turn the film on in the first place. The movie's premise being centered on pornography meant that Videodrome was always going to be an incredibly sexual film. However, being conceived and helmed by David Cronenberg ensures that the cult 1983 sci-fi body horror became one of the best sexy horror movies, especially when it comes to those that use sex as a core foundation of their premise and not just as an aesthetic or thematic device.

9 The Hunger (1983)

The Vampire Movie That Reveals Blood Isn't All They Lust For

A woman smiling in The Hunger

The sexual nature of vampires has been present in the lore since Dracula was written by Bram Stoker in 1897. Drinking the blood of virgins, killing via stake in the heart, and the nighttime visits of vampire lore are not an accident — they are explicit references to sexuality. 1983's The Hunger takes these themes and puts them plainly on the screen with its love triangle plot between a doctor and a couple who also happen to be vampires.

There is plenty of blood, of course, but The Hunger also takes time to explore the sexual desires of creatures that have lived for centuries, which is why this film sits firmly in the erotic-horror genre. The 1983 movie was the directorial debut of Tony Scott and starred Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon alongside legendary musician David Bowie. Bowie, himself a sexual icon at the time, helped to ensure that The Hunger became one of the best sexy horror movies, even among a niche subgenre rich in them like vampire films.

Few modern sexy horror movies are as widely known for their erotic content as 2009's Jennifer's Body. This dark comedy horror stars Megan Fox as the titular Jennifer, whose titular body becomes demonically possessed and host to a demon who uses her sexuality to seduce men and feed on them when she gets them into a vulnerable position. Eventually, it is revealed Jennifer is playing host to a succubus, a mythological creature deeply rooted in sex and eroticism.

While, at first glance, Jennifer's Body seems to be exploiting Megan Fox's sexuality, there are clear feminist undertones to the film, as oppressive males are often punished for their aggressiveness. When the #MeToo movement began, Jessica's Body grew in popularity as a cult favorite and symbol of the feminist movement in horror (via Vox).

Jennifer's Body is available to stream on Max.

7 Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

Francis Ford Coppola's Erotic Take On The Classic Vampire Tale

Vampire Lucy in a white dress in Bram Stoker's Dracula

Release Date
November 13, 1992
Runtime
127 Minutes

Making one of the sexiest horror movies of the 1990s was an unusual follow-up for Francis Ford Coppola after a career of gangster films, dramas, and sweeping war epics. His dip into horror was both celebrated and somewhat mystifying to critics who weren't completely sure of what to make of it. Dracula in this film is very well aligned with the original novel, and despite Bram Stoker's text being written in the 19th century, the faithfulness of Ford Coppola's movie meant it was rich in erotic moments.

Gary Oldman stars as the vampire and hypnotically seduces several women throughout the film. However, it is Lucy (Sadie Frost) and Dracula's brides who exude the most sexuality. Their openness and eroticism are a statement about the restricted role women played during the era in both the book and movie, themes that translated incredibly well to the screen.

6 The Love Witch (2016)

A Filmmaker ion Project Chillingly Blends Sex And Fear Like Few Movies Can

Elaine Parks dressed all in pink at a restaurant in The Love Witch

The Love Witch is a ion project of virtuoso filmmaker Anna Biller, who not only directed but wrote, edited, produced, and even scored the sexy horror movie. The 2016 film centers around a woman who uses witchcraft to get men to fall in love with her, and the erotic elements and suggestive scenes ramp up from there.

The themes of eroticism and sex in the film and the way they play off each other make for a chilling, often hilarious, and always sexy horror movie. The ion that the lead witch gives her targets is one of a kind. However, the other darker side of her abilities is shown when she performs an occult ritual, and despite the title possibly hinting at a rom-com, The Love Witch should never be mistaken as anything other than a horror movie, as it's disturbing finale more than attests to.

The Love Witch is available to stream on Peacock.
