Netflix has officially revealed the release date for season 2 of its hit original series, renew it for a second season.
The series was actually so popular that Netflix stated it expected both Sex Education, along with their series You, to reach upwards of 40 million viewers during their first four weeks of streaming. Because of this monumental success, Sex Education quickly went into production earlier this year in May, with all of the original cast back on board. Now, fans of the series can finally have an idea as to when season 2 will be hitting the platform.
According to Netflix (via The Wrap), a mural in London that was set up by the streaming service announced that the series will be returning with eight episodes on January 17, 2020. Netflix also released a full description of season 2, which explains that this season, "Otis must master his newly discovered sexual urges in order to progress with his girlfriend Ola whilst also dealing with his now strained relationship with Maeve." Meanwhile, at Moordale Secondary, the school is "in the throes of a Chlamydia outbreak, highlighting the need for better sex education at the school," and this time around, "new kids come to town who will challenge the status quo."
The second season will also see characters from season 1 evolving and experiencing new journeys all on their own. Considering that the trailer for season 1 didn't drop until nine days before its January premiere, it wouldn't be surprising if season 2's trailer was released in the same fashion.
Sex Education's success derives from a multitude of things. Mainly, the brilliant writing coupled with incredible performances has taken what could have easily been an uncomfortable viewing experience into a show that's filled to the brim with heart. Although it's uncertain how long Netflix will carry out the series for, season 2 of Sex Education will surely be just as fun and authentic as its predecessor. Hopefully, if the total number of viewers is as high as they were with season 1, a third season will find its way into the picture soon. Until that day comes, fans can officially mark their calendars to binge season 2 on January 17, 2020.
