Fans may have been divided on there will be a second season. But no matter what the reception will be on the continuing story of Carrie and her friends, nothing can touch the magic of the original series.
Considering the show released in the late '90s on HBO, there are a few things that aged poorly but ultimately, Sex and the City is a pioneering show for its depiction of female friendship. Until And Just Like That season 2 comes out, fans will have to make do with rewatching the original series. They're in for a treat, as there were many fabulous things in season 1 that differ from the rest of the series.
Gatherings In Carrie's Apartment
Carrie wasn't the wealthiest character on SATC, but her apartment was the hot spot for meet-ups with Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte. Yeezyandthepuzzycats wrote, "I love how much they hang out at Carrie's apartment together in this season! So cute and fun to have them just hanging out."
In later seasons, the group doesn't get together at each other's apartments too much. They opt for restaurants and cafes instead, but there was something cozy about their gatherings at Carrie's.
Love For Messy Carrie
Carrie was a complex character. As a writer, she spoke her true thoughts and feelings through her column. In season 1, she was dating more than ever, which only made her column more successful because readers couldn't wait to see what Carrie's dating life was like.
Along the way, Carrie had her sad moments in season 1 but she grew from her experiences. Because of Carrie's rollercoaster of a dating life, SpacingIsMyGame wrote, "I MISS THE MESSY CARRIE!" They continued saying, "The movies and AJLT show her as too 'put together.'" Season 1 was prime Carrie.
The Breaking Of The Fourth Wall
One of the more special parts about SATC is that fans can hear Carrie's thoughts in different scenes as the show's narrator. While the scene plays on, a voiceover of Carrie's feelings lets viewers know exactly what's going on and what she's thinking.
In season 1, however, there was no voiceover. Instead, Carrie broke the fourth wall and would talk directly to the camera. EdgyChannel5 wrote, "I miss when Carrie used to talk to the camera in s1." Other Redditors agreed and felt it was a "fun" aspect of season 1.
The Women Were More Relatable In Season 1
Carrie and "the girls" (as she lovingly calls them) were the most liked characters in the series. They each had their own highs and lows in work and romance, which made their stories hilarious and relatable.
This is what AJgrizz misses the most about season 1. "The early seasons were the best because the ladies were actually relatable. By the end of the series it's hard to find that connection," they wrote. In the final season, the women did have a slight disconnect when Carrie moved to Paris, Miranda moved to Brooklyn, Samantha battled cancer, and Charlotte went through the adoption process, which is why season 1 reigns supreme.
The Different Camera Angles That Were Used
Carrie is a relationship enthusiast and had some of the best quotes on love in SATC. In the episode "The Power of Female Sex," Carrie is excited about a man she met through a mutual acquaintance. After a few exciting days, Carrie was ready to spend the night with him.
However, in one scene, Carrie is walking away from her date and floats away into the sky with a big smile on her face. One Redditor said how much they loved this scene. "I love it. It shows how Carrie sometimes gets lost in her own fantasy daydreams." Likewise, huncamuncamouse wrote, "I loved all these offbeat touches from the early seasons. I'll take those little risks over the overly polished movies any day." This kind of camerawork isn't done in later seasons.
'90s Style Was A Classic
Sex and the City is a show about fashion as much as it is about friendship. From SATC's most impractical outfits to its stylish ones, Carrie and co. always dressed uniquely — especially in season 1.
Mis_Kit_Kat wrote the '90s style was what they loved most about season 1. "The excessive amount of black, the small sunglasses, the purple and blue eye shadow- those are things you would actually see on the street in the era." They went on to say that the movies and revival were overdone, making the women look like they were a part of daily photoshoots.
The General Aesthetic
Season 1 had a different aesthetic from the other seasons. Aside from Carrie's stylish shoe collection, the general lighting, camerawork, and overall look is different.
Redditor aaanccch wrote that that's what they missed most about season 1. "Everything about [the] season was so damn cool. The sounds, the music, the outfits, the way they talked. Honestly, it's like as the camera quality got better, everything felt faker. The better quality doesn't look more realistic to me," they wrote.
The On-Street Interviews
Not only did Carrie used to break the fourth wall and talk to the camera in the middle of the scene, but season 1 also had rare interviews with random people on the streets of New York.
After Carrie would talk about the topic of her column, the camera would pan to relevant characters or even ersby on the street who added their thoughts on the topic. One Redditor wrote, "I love when they interview random people in the first season. I find it charming!" Fans liked watching the people of New York give their thoughts on Carrie's column topics.
Carrie's Apartment Was Different (And Better)
Carrie's apartment in season 1 is different than her apartment in later episodes. Cutestcatlady missed Carrie's apartment in season 1, writing, "I had forgotten what Carrie’s apartment used to look like then! I really like it! I love her little chandelier in the hall by her door and love where she has her bed set up. I’d love to see more of it and wish it stayed this way!"
After the first episode, Carrie's apartment changes to what viewers see normally before she remodels. Despite the changes, this Redditor liked her pilot apartment better.
