Warning! This article contains major spoilers for Severance season 2's episode 6.
Mark meets a dark fate in Severance has become the most-watched show on Apple TV+. Given how Severance is only getting better with each episode and managing to keep its story comprehensible despite being driven by several complex ideas, it is not surprising that it has achieved this feat. Even in season 2, Severance has been leaving viewers with compelling questions after each installment, prompting them to ask for more.
Severance season 2's epsiode 6 has a similar impact on viewers as it leaves them with a massive cliffhanger that makes Mark's fate uncertain. The episode shows how, after giving it some thought, Mark finally agrees to take a drastic step that will escalate his reintegration but also leave him with the risk of losing his life. Moments later, Mark falls to the ground and starts convulsing, which makes it hard not to wonder if he will be fine in the Apple TV+ sci-fi show's future installments.
Why Mark Collapses At The End Of Severance Season 2, Episode 6
Mark Seemingly Gets A Seizure
After Reghabi floods Mark's chip with a strange liquid, she and Mark hope that it will escalate the reintegration procedure. Despite realizing the potential consequences of the process on Mark's health, she encourages him to agree to the chip flooding. Mark, too, eventually agrees to get it done and experiences strange symptoms. At first, a strange taste emerges in his mouth, hinting that he is about to have a seizure. Moments later, the sudden surge of electrical activity in his brain makes him lose motor function, preventing him from grabbing a glass of water.

How Reintegration Works In Severance
Reintegration is a complicated procedure in Severance, with season 2 further outlining how it works and blends the minds of Innies and Outies.
Before Mark can react to what is happening, he suddenly falls to the ground. Although the show does not reveal what happened to him, he is most certainly alive but unconscious. While unconscious, it seems likely that he will get more visceral visions of his life as an innie, given how the increase in the electrical activity in his brain will help him access buried or suppressed memories. While only time will tell how the new stage of integration will impact Mark's innie, his outie will likely be equipped with a lot of secrets about Lumon and his innie's life before he regains consciousness.
Irving, Burt & Fields' Strange Dinner Conversation Explained - Is Burt Hiding Something?
Burt Seems Suspicious After The Episode's Events
During the dinner scene in Severance season 2's episode 6, Fields recalls that they decided to send Burt to work for Lumon as a severed employee to ensure his place in heaven. A priest convinced him that the innies are separate individuals in themselves, which would mean that god would judge them separately. The fact that Fields and Burt even thought about this suggests how skewed their perception of religion is. At the same time, it also hints that Burt has a dark past, which he and Fields believed would prevent him from going to heaven.
It also seems strange that Fields seems certain about his place in heaven but doubts whether Burt would be judged any differently. The dinner table conversation turns even more suspicious and strange when Fields claims that Burt has been with Lumon for 20 years. Before Irv can question how that is possible, Burt corrects him by saying that the Severance procedure did not even exist 20 years ago, making it impossible for him to work with Lumon.
Fields' slip-up about Burt's identity makes it less likely that he is involved with Lumon.
After this scene, it is hard not to believe that Burt worked in Lumon even before the Severance procedure was introduced. While only time will tell what Burt and Fields are up to, Irving might be making a mistake by blindly trusting them. If he does not tread carefully, Burt might find out what he is trying to do to stop Lumon from the outside and even report him to Lumon. Fields' slip-up about Burt's identity makes it less likely that he is involved with Lumon. Burt, however, seems to have done some dark things for the company in the past, which makes him a threat to Irv.
Why Mark Agrees To Get His Chip Flooded After Meeting Helena
Helena's Odd Behavior Convinces Him Something Is Up At Lumon
Mark and Helena initially indulge in awkwardly flirty banter in Severance season 2's episode 6 when they meet at a diner. Although Mark wonders why the Eagan family member is trying to strike up a conversation with him, Helena tries to maintain that she is only curious about him because he works for Lumon. Things take a strange turn, however, when Helena calls Gemma "Hannah" when she asks him about his late wife. Mark seems to instantly realize that Helena knows something about Gemma that he does not and is only pretending to not know her at all.
With this, he realizes he must find the truth about what Lumon is doing to Gemma before it is too late. Realizing the urgency of his reintegration quest, he returns home and asks Reghabi to flood his chip. He hopes that flooding the chip will quicken the process and finally help him connect with the version of his wife existing inside Lumon.
The Time Gaps & Crossovers In Mark's Memory Explained
Mark Is Experiencing The Effects Of Living In Two Different Timelines
The innies and outies exist in the same material world. However, since one's perception of time is unique, Mark's innie and outie experience time differently. Owing to this, the more the two personas overlap after the reintegration, the more Mark will experience a sense of cognitive dissonance and psychological fragmentation. He is already starting to see subtle crossovers between his two lives and noticing strange time gaps, hinting that his sense of self is starting to break. Before the reintegration, his innie and outie maintained their own unique individuality.
...Once the overlap fully happens, Mark will notice a contrasting sense of duality in almost everything he has known about himself so far.
A few aspects of their personalities shared some common ground, but both existed as separate entities with distinct desires, personalities, and motives. While the outie struggled to accept his wife's death, the innie was relatively more cheerful, enjoying the early days of his romance with Helly. However, once the overlap fully happens, Mark will notice a contrasting sense of duality in almost everything he has known about himself so far. As Reghabi assures him in season 2's episode 6, he will need some time before he learns to understand the dual timelines and memories he has lived with.
The Implications Of Mark Sleeping With Helly Explained
Severance Has Been Hinting At Pregnancy Plotline
The presence of babies in Severance season 2's opening credits has made many viewers wonder whether it is hinting at a pregnancy storyline. While only time will tell whether this theory will materialize, the show has seemingly paved the way for the narrative by showing how Mark has slept with both Helly and Helena. However, even if the pregnancy story beat never sees the light of day, Mark has found himself in a complex situation where he is romantically inclined towards two women (Helly & Gemma) and their dual personas.

Once the reintegration happens, an overlap between innie Mark's feelings for Helly and outie Mark's love for Gemma will exist. At the same time, since innie Mark is already struggling to draw a distinction between how he feels about Helly and Helena, he will likely face even more confusion once the reintegration begins. Mark's innie is already in a strange "throuple" situation after season 2's recent episodes. After the reintegration, these romantic entanglements will intensify and make Mark question his identity and perception of love.
Who Was Looking At The Documents In Irving's Box?
The Show Makes It Evident That It Was Drummond
Although Severance season 2's episode 6 does not reveal who was looking at the documents in Irving's box, it discloses that the man has a "FROLIC" tattoo. This makes it evident that the man is Drummond, Lumon's Global Management worker, who seems to hold immense power in the company. The fact that Drummond breaks into Irving's home after he leaves to meet Burt suggests the two characters might be in touch. Burt might have given him the green flag to investigate Irv's home while he visits him for dinner.
It may be too soon to determine Irving's fate, but his outie could meet the same ending as his innie if he does not tread with caution.
Irving's outie seems to be in some serious danger, given how Lumon's officials, like Drummond, also seem to know about what he is trying to do. Since Burt also seems to be involved with the company, Irv will have to carefully watch his future moves and ensure he trusts nobody. It may be too soon to determine Irving's fate, but his outie could meet the same ending as his innie if he does not tread with caution.
Milchick's "Fellowship Graduation" Threat To Ms. Huang Explained
Milchick's Warning To Huang Confirms What She Is Doing At Lumon
Milchick warns Miss Huang in Severance season 2's episode 6 that if she does not fulfill her responsibilities at Lumon and fails to complete her fellowship, she will not be accepted into Lumon's Wintertide program. The show does not reveal what Wintertide means, but Milchick's warning confirms that Huang is doing a fellowship at Lumon, hoping it will eventually help her land another profile at the company. This revelation could mean that even though Huang seems incredibly young, she is only associated with Lumon during her summer break.
Or, she could be on the verge of graduating from school and hopes to Lumon after completing her fellowship with the company. Regardless of what the future holds for her at Lumon, something about her does not seem right. Her insensitivity towards the severed workers and her robotic demeanor raise many questions about how long she has been associated with the Lumon "cult" and what she hopes to achieve from it.
Why Dylan's Wife Lies To Him About Her Meeting With His Innie
She Is Starting To Like His Innie More Than His Outie
When Severance season 2's episode 2 walked through Dylan's struggles with finding his job in the outside world, the show hinted that he is not particularly nice to his wife when he is stressed. His wife, Gretchen, also hinted at her issues with Dylan when she told his innie about his struggles with finding his thing in the outside world. However, as episode 6 suggests, she really appreciates Dylan's innie and is starting to like him even more than his outie.
It will become easier for Lumon to control Dylan if he gets a little too attached to his outie's wife.
Since Dylan's outie and innie are technically different individuals, Gretchen arguably cheats on the outie by kissing the innie. She realizes that this would not sit well with the outie and also seems to feel guilty about her intimate interaction with the innie. Therefore, instead of complicating her relationship with her husband by telling him the truth about what happened between her and his innie, she lies about not meeting the innie at all in Severance season 2's episode 6.
