These days, as soon as a movie is a quantifiable box office success, the studio hires someone to write a sequel. Sometimes, a movie is so overwhelmingly successful that a sequel is a no-brainer and they fast-track it into development – for example, Black Panther.

But other times, it’s not quite successful enough to make a sequel a priority – for example, Don’t Breathe – and if the original doesn’t prove to have lasting value or the cast doesn’t agree on the script, they end up getting stuck in development hell. So, here are 11 Sequels In Development That We’re Still Waiting For.

Beverly Hills Cop 4

Eddie Murphy has been talking about reprising his role as Axel Foley in a fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie for years. He has itted that his motivation behind wanting to do a fourth movie is the chance to redo the franchise’s finale, since he thought the third movie turned out “horrible.”

Brett Ratner had been attached to direct, but due to take Axel back to his hometown of Detroit.

District 10

Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi allegory about the Apartheid in South Africa, which combined an alien invasion story with political commentary about immigration and racism, was acclaimed by critics when it released in 2009. Ever since then, we’ve been waiting for the sequel, District 10.

In 2013, Blomkamp said, “I really want to make a District 9 sequel. I genuinely do. The problem is, I have a bunch of ideas and stuff that I want to make. I’m relatively new to this – I’m about to make my third film, and now, the pattern that I’m starting to realize is very true is that you lock yourself into a film beyond the film you’re currently working on. But it just doesn’t work for me.”

Disenchanted

It’s been 12 years since Disney’s fairy tale homage Enchanted became a huge hit and a sequel called Disenchanted was announced.

James Marsden said, “I don’t know. I think that the clock is ticking on that one. Amy Adams and I are both saying, ‘If there’s going to be a sequel, we’re not getting any younger.’ Since we play sort of ageless animated characters. Hopefully we do. That was something really special and I’d love to come back and do another. I’ve heard the same things you’ve heard. There’s a script out there somewhere and there’s talk of it, but I never believe it until I see the script and learned we’re making that film. So, I don’t know. Too many eggs in that basket.” That was way back in 2011, so God knows what his thoughts are on the age thing now.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa 2

After Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, the big-screen adaptation of Steve Coogan’s iconic radio DJ character, was released to positive reviews and box office success in the summer of 2013, it was announced that a sequel went straight into development.

Henry Normal, the co-founder of Coogan’s production company Baby Cow (who produced the movie), told the Guardian, “We are planning a sequel [to Alpha Papa], yes; that will be great.” Coogan has continued to play Partridge in various incarnations on the small screen in the past few years, but we still have yet to see the narcissistic Norfolk broadcaster back in movie theaters.

Evil Dead 2

Fede Alvarez’s remake of the classic Sam Raimi indie horror movie one of the best horror remakes ever made. It took all the most frightening concepts from Raimi’s film, but used the money and CGI technology that Raimi didn’t have in 1981 and used them to ratchet up the tension and terror.

The remake was a box office success, so a sequel to the remake, as well as a sequel to Raimi’s Evil Dead remake or a sequel to his original film Don’t Breathe, and the winner was Evil Dead, so this could be moving forward soon.

We’re Still the Millers

The road trip comedy became a huge hit back in 2013 to the tune of $270 million.

Naturally, the studio, New Line Cinema, wanted to a sequel into development as quickly as possible. yet to move past the script stage. It was a great cast; it would be fun to see them all get back together.

Edge of Tomorrow 2 (a.k.a. Live Die Repeat and Repeat)

Emily Blunt recently said that she, Tom Cruise, and director Doug Liman are all eager to return to that world and produce a sequel, although she did cast doubt that it would happen: “It’s a lot for all the stars to align for everyone to be free at the same time and available to do it at the same time.”

Coming 2 America

This is the second Eddie Murphy-starring entry on the list. For years, we’ve been waiting for a sequel to his cross-cultural comedy a 2020 release date.

Both Murphy and Arsenio Hall are returning for the sequel, which will see Prince Akeem returning to America in search of his long-lost son. However, many iterations of this sequel have been announced and fallen apart before, so take this with a pinch of salt.

Die Hard 6 (a.k.a. McClane)

Since the fifth McClane that would reportedly be a blend of John McClane origin story starring a younger actor as the roguish cop (Alden Ehrenreich, anyone?) and present-day sequel starring Bruce Willis.

The resounding consensus was that this would be tacky and unnecessary. For a while, McClane had been included on the 20th Century Fox release slate. However, after Disney acquired the studio, it disappeared from the slate and it’s unclear if it’ll ever get made now.

Kill Bill Vol. 3

Quentin Tarantino’s two-part action thriller he’s been teasing a third movie for years.
