The Lynne Ramsey's Die, My Love, and Spike Lee's (out of competition) Highest 2 Lowest, among other notable titles. Continuing the festival's audience tradition, Cannes 2025 has had its fair share of long-standing ovations.
One of the festival's anticipated films features a leading performance from Stellan Skarsgård. The patriarch of the Skarsgård family, the actor is known for his roles in movies like Good Will Hunting and Amistad. More recently, he has made a splash in multiple high-caliber sci-fi projects, including Luthen Rael in Andor and Baron Harkonnen in Dune: Part Two. Now, Skarsgård's latest film has made its Cannes Film Festival premiere, and the results are stunning.
Sentimental Value Is A Cannes Stunner
It Received One Of The Longest Standing Ovations
Sentimental Value has officially received one of the best reactions at the Cannes Film Festival in years. Described as a comedy-drama, the story is about family and filmmaking in the face of loss. It is directed by Joachim Trier, whose previous projects include acclaimed films such as Oslo, August 31st, and The Worst Person in the World. The latter film starred Renate Reinvse, with whom Trier works again on Sentimental Value. Reinvse and Skarsgård lead the cast, which also includes Elle Fanning, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Jesper Christensen.

Cannes 2025 Standing Ovations Ranked By Length
Several of the world premieres at this year’s Cannes Film Festival have received very long standing ovations, which is typical for the festival.
Per review from ScreenRant's own Graeme Guttmann, who called the movie "absolutely breathtaking." Guttmann also commented on the on-the-ground screening experience for Sentimental Value, in a quote found below:
"I was at the press screening of Sentimental Value and outside of the premiere. The energy on the Croisette and in front of the Palais was insane, the most energetic I’ve felt in the entire festival. And it was the most enthusiastic response at a press screening I’ve seen so far, too."
What This Means For Sentimental Value
This Is Good For Awards Season
Playing well at Cannes is no small feat. Last year's Palme d'Or winner was Anora, which went on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards this year. Even if Sentimental Value does not walk away with the Palme d'Or come Saturday, its positive reception could be a good sign for the movie's performance during awards season. Other Cannes favorites, like Triangle of Sadness and The Zone of Interest, have been nominated for Best Picture, and if it keeps up its strong reviews, Sentimental Value could be headed there as well.
