She-Hulk's series relaunch promises to highlight just how "sensational" Jennifer Walters really is. Dating back to January 2022, a new ongoing She-Hulk series hit the shelves with Rainbow Rowell at the helm as lead writer. In the time since then, the eponymous title character has navigated through enough love and heartbreak to fill up an entire rogues' gallery. The She-Hulk #15 will mark the final issue of the series, but this is far from the end of Jen's story nor does it mark the end of Rowell's run writing the character.
Beginning October 18, Rainbow Rowell and Andres Genolet are relaunching Sensational She-Hulk. Jen Bartel's cover art for the first issue can be found further below. In an interview with Marvel, Rowell promises the series to be an "ongoing celebration" of the character and what she's gone through in the past 15 issues of She-Hulk. This teases the return of ing players from that initial run, like Jennifer's boyfriend Jack of Hearts, her latest antagonist Scoundrel, and her best friend Patsy Walker. In addition, the Punch Club will be revisited, potentially with a new member ing the ranks. Most importantly, Rainbow Rowell hopes to remind readers exactly what makes She-Hulk so sensational.
She-Hulk is Sensational Once Again
When asked what the word "sensational" means to her and how it applies to the She-Hulk character, Rainbow Rowell had the following to say to Marvel:
That word makes me think of the original SENSATIONAL SHE-HULK from artist/writer John Byrne. It's a vibe, really: gorgeous art, gorgeous Jen, jokes, a feeling that anything can happen, and a focus on a Jen as a person, a woman. We were definitely inspired by that run in our previous issues, and we're leaning in even more with the new book. I want it to feel really smooth and buoyant, an ongoing celebration of Jen as a character.
Rainbow Rowell seems to reiterate the core of what makes She-Hulk work as a character, both in her current run and in John Byrne's classic run. her crush on the villain Scoundrel. Instead, the challenges Jennifer Walters finds herself facing in her stories are normally more personal ones that the average viewer can relate to.
The stakes of Sensational She-Hulk usually involve Jen trying to balance her personal life with a professional one, attempting to leave room for a love life, and just general womanhood. She-Hulk stories are meant to be fun, sexy, quirky, and relatable. She's an extraordinary woman working through ordinary circumstances. She's not necessarily extraordinary for her physical strength (though that is a factor) but for her inner strength as a determined, career-driven woman. The latest rendition of She-Hulk showcased the key qualities that made readers fall in love with She-Hulk during Byrne's run in the '80s. Now, Rainbow Rowell can be expected to lean even further into those qualities for Sensational She-Hulk. Sensational She-Hulk #1 hits stores on October 18.
