The trailer has hit for Marvel's Secret Invasion, an event series coming to Disney+. This show will bring Nick Fury back to Earth as he looks into a Skrull infiltration that he believes might have reached even government positions. While the only heroes showing up in the trailer were Fury, Maria Hill, and War Machine, the series is based on a 2008 Marvel Comics storyline that featured the entire Marvel Universe.
It is unclear if the Disney+ series will have any actual superheroes replaced by Skrulls. However, that was the entire of Secret Invasion in Marvel Comics, and that was because some notable heroes ended up replaced, starting a war between Earth and the invading Skrulls. Here is a look at the heroes replaced by Skrulls in the comic book story.
Elektra
Elektra was the hero whose identity started the war. Echo killed Elektra in a battle including The New Avengers, and the team sent her body to Iron Man to investigate. He then called in the Illuminati, and that led to Black Bolt's revelation he was a Skrull, which officially started the war.
The Skrull who took over Elektra's body only arrived a few short months before her death. She was also an example of their pattern, replacing heroes no one knew intimately, remaining mysterious. Not only that, but the Skrulls wanted her to die, so Earth's heroes would know the invasion had started, and to cause distrust among them. It worked.
Black Bolt
Marvel Cinematic Universe fans met The Illuminati in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Much like in that movie, the comic book versions dealt with issues in the Marvel Universe, often taking on the role of judge, jury, and executioner. This came back to bite them when they went to the Skrull Empire and threatened them.
The Skrulls responded by attacking Black Bolt and replacing him shortly after Maximus captured the throne from the former King of Attilan. The surprise hit when he attacked his fellow Illuminati after they realized a Skrull was impersonating at least one hero on Earth.
Spider-Woman
For infiltrating the heroes on Earth, the Skrulls knew they needed to put someone inside Earth's top teams. They did this with Spider-Woman. The replacement happened right before Spider-Woman ed the New Avengers. This was the most important Skrull as well. While the Skrulls replacing heroes were all mighty warriors, Queen Veranke replaced Spider-Woman.
Thanks to this, she made sure she was in the center of the action when the Secret Invasion war started. She also was instrumental in the strife during the Civil War, manipulating the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., and Hydra, which made it easy for the Skrulls to start their attack.
Hank Pym
During Civil War, Iron Man had several allies who ed the idea of imprisoning heroes in the Negative Zone. One of these was renowned scientist Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man. This was all part of the plan, as a Skrull replaced Pym long before Civil War, taking over right after Avengers Disassembled.
This Skrull had a big part to play as well. He gave Pym's ex-wife Wasp a new growth formula, which was a Skrull bioweapon that almost killed several heroes. While Pym wasn't a hero anymore, he was still an important part of the Secret Invasion.
Jarvis
It wasn't just super-powered heroes who the Skrulls replaced. Thanks to Queen Veranke taking Spider-Woman's place in the Avengers, she helped a Skrull replace the Avengers' long-time butler Edwin Jarvis. This revelation arrived in the first issue of Secret Invasion, where the war began.
Jarvis played a major role, as he released a virus into the computers that took out Stark International and caused Iron Man to suffer a seizure thanks to the connection to his armor. It proved, above all, the Skrulls had every base covered.
Captain Mar-Vell
Captain Mar-Vell died many years ago after battling cancer. That alone should have hinted that he had to be a Skrull. However, Mar-Vell returned in Civil War: The Return #1, months before Secret Invasion, so there were people who believed in him.
It also didn't help that he believed he was the real deal, and that made some wonder if he was the real deal. This also helped Norman Osborn when he convinced this Skrull that he could still be a hero like Mar-Vell, and he was one of the Skrulls who turned on his brethren.
Mockingbird
Mockingbird is someone else who had been dead for a long time before Secret Invasion started. However, in the first issue, a Skrull spaceship crashed in the Savage Land and several old-school heroes came out of it. It took a while to figure out who was who, but they all ended up as Skrulls.
What was interesting was that many of these Skrulls believed they were the heroes they impersonated. This included Mockingbird, and she convinced her former husband Hawkeye (who was Ronin at the time) she was the real deal. This ended up as a tragic moment because when Clint realized the truth, he brutally murdered her.
Longshot
When the Skrulls devise their plan, they figured out how to fool everyone on Earth. As long as the Skrulls remained in the form of the heroes they replaced, no one could detect they were anything different from the original heroes. They even ensured this worked with mutants, and one Skrull took Longshot's place.
It worked too because not even Monet could detect him, although Darwin finally exposed him. This was an important Skrull too, as it was Nogor the Talisman, and he represented the Skrull gods and ensured their blessing as they took over Earth. This is one Skrull that didn't die, although a Skrull bounty hunter named Jazinda captured him with the help of X-Factor and She-Hulk.
Brother Voodoo
Another advantage that the Skrulls had was that they could mimic magic s, and other magic s couldn't recognize it. This allowed them to replace Jericho Drumm, the sorcerer known as Doctor Voodoo. This gave them an advantage since Doctor Voodoo lived in Wakanda.
With Voodoo replaced, they got into Wakanda and used the man who served as Black Panther's close advisor. Luckily, before he could do any actual damage, Cannibal was able to see through his disguise and the two killed each other. However, this told Black Panther the Secret Invasion had started, and it brought Wakanda into the war.
Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine and Dum Dum Dugan
One name that really might play into the Disney+ version of Secret Invasion in the MCU was Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine. That is because she is in the MCU, and she has been building a team of antiheroes known as the Thunderbolts. However, with Secret Invasion coming out before Thunderbolts, it is not likely she is a Skrull in the MCU.
In the comic books, both Valentina and World War II hero Dum Dum Dugan both ended up replaced by Skrulls, which put them on the inside where they manipulated Nick Fury during the war. The Dugan Skrull helped start the war by sending a computer virus into all S.H.I.E.L.D. systems and destroying S.W.O.R.D.'s base. Valentina tried to assassinate Fury, only for him to realize the truth and kill her first.
