Although countless Scrubs revival won't just focus on the original cast, but also on younger doctors played by new actors. However, one massive behind-the-scenes change could have the biggest impact.

Although there have been no official announcements yet regarding who will be coming back, Scrubs season 10 needs several characters to return if the revival is to feel anything like the show's golden era. That being said, it was Scrubs' talented crop of writers, directors, producers, and other unseen personnel who also contributed to Scrubs' success. Thankfully, Lawrence has already mentioned that many of these figures will also be returning for Scrubs season 10, but like the revival's cast, the crew will receive an injection of new faces - and one of them could hold a very senior role.

Scrubs Season 10 Will Be The First Without Bill Lawrence As Showrunner

Lawrence will be replaced for the sitcom's revival

As well as creating the show, Bill Lawrence served as showrunner for all nine seasons of Scrubs. Speaking with Deadline, Lawrence said that one of the things holding up production on Scrubs season 10 was a deal with a new showrunner being "made as we speak." Lawrence hasn't revealed who will be at the helm when the medical sitcom is revived, but he has confirmed he won't be returning to his former role, and that his replacement was very nearly signed on to take to the showrunner's chair.

His sense of humor and penchant for emotional whiplash can be found throughout Scrubs seasons 1 through 9, and he has spoken often about being present on set and in the writers' room.

Although Lawrence only directed 17 of the 182 original Scrubs episodes, his role as the show's overseer was constant. His sense of humor and penchant for emotional whiplash can be found throughout Scrubs seasons 1 through 9, and he has spoken often about being present on set and in the writers' room. He was in charge of the characters' overall arcs and guided the show to its Scrubs season 8 finale, and even brought the show back in its softly-rebooted ninth season under the Med School moniker.

Why Bill Lawrence Isn't The Showrunner For Scrubs Season 10

His Apple TV+ workload already keeps him very busy

Rumors of a Scrubs revival started to circulate when Lawrence offhandedly mentioned the possibility of a reunion movie with Zach Braff and Donald Faison on the show's official rewatch podcast, Fake Doctors, Real Friends. During these discussions, one common obstacle continued to arise, and it related to Lawrence's contractual status. The Scrubs creator has been hard at work making shows such as Ted Lasso, Bad Monkey, and Shrinking, for Apple TV+ in recent years, but Scrubs is a Disney-owned property, so Lawrence was unable to return without having everything agreed upon by both parties.

As well as overseeing all his Apple TV+ projects, Lawrence's packed slate also includes an (but untitled) collaboration with Steve Carell and HBO in 2026.

Although Lawrence has been heavily discussing the Scrubs revival and what it will look like, there's a very clear reason that could for his decision not to return to showrunning duties. In short, he's just too busy to give Scrubs the attention he was once able to give it when it was originally being made. As well as overseeing all his Apple TV+ projects, Lawrence's packed slate also includes an (but untitled) collaboration with Steve Carell and HBO in 2026. So, it's not really a surprise that Lawrence has sought a replacement for Scrubs.

Don't Worry, Bill Lawrence Will Still Be Involved With The Scrubs Revival

In the same interview, Lawrence also described the relationship with his incoming replacement as that of "old friends" and that the unnamed figure has already been exchanging ideas with Lawrence while watching all the old episodes. So, although Lawrence may not have the time to be as present for Scrubs' next era, he is still going to have an active hand in how the show is brought back and operated. If this wasn't the case, Disney wouldn't have had to wait for him to confirm the fact he would be able to straddle Scrubs and his Apple TV+ duties.

Scrubs Season 10 Can Make Up For Never Showing This Massive Event From Between The Final 2 Seasons

The Scrubs revival has been confirmed as being a tribute to the past while also looking to the future, but it must make up for one big mistake.

Lawrence will most likely serve in a capacity above the new Scrubs showrunner, as an even more senior overseer than whoever replaces him. That way, Lawrence can be in charge of the story's broader strokes, while the new showrunner handles the day-to-day operations of how to get to certain narrative milestones, asg directors to episodes, and other similar tasks. Lawrence's tease of already having a solid relationship with the new showrunner could even mean his replacement worked on Scrubs' original run, which, if true, could be a huge advantage.
