Scarlet Witch with the Darkhold in Marvel Comics

The Scarlet Witch's path has been long and winding, and her current mastery level is hard-earned. She's lost control of her powers (and her mind) to the tune of millions of deaths and a broken world, and she has spent years soul-searching and learning everything possible about her magic. As a result, she now either embodies or collects the universe's most powerful magic. Wanda became the Living Darkhold after trapping and fusing with the god Chthon, allowing her to tap into that ancient magical power if a situation is dire enough to merit the risk it comes with.

Wanda has become a guardian, moved beyond basic needs like sleep, and the combination of her chaos magic and the contents of her vault make her limitless in every way that matters.

Wanda confirms that her magic is only a fraction of what she can call upon: her vault houses a library able to "rewrite the stars," gravel from the original Darkhold, and magical tokens and artifacts taken from entirely different realms. Wanda has become a guardian, moved beyond basic needs like sleep, and the combination of her chaos magic and the contents of her vault make her limitless in every way that matters. Painfully learned lessons keep her from grabbing for all that power, but the possibility alone makes her an equal to Marvel's strongest entities.

The Only Thing That Has Ever Held Scarlet Witch Back From Becoming Marvel's Strongest Character Has Been Herself

What Happens If Wanda Stops Self-Limiting?

Scarlet Witch and Cthon merging in a Marvel Comic

While other incomprehensibly powerful characters, such as X-Men's Jean Grey, tackle problems on a cosmic level, Scarlet Witch has taken a different approach. Rather than flaunt her magical talents, she's focused on control and protection. Wanda knows the cost of losing grip on her abilities, and the effect would be even more devastating now. Consequently, she offers only glimpses of what she can do, yet her most conservative uses of magic are still staggering. As an Avenger, Scarlet Witch holds herself back for everyone else's protection, but the power to destroy or rewrite the universe is still hers to command.

Scarlet Witch #9 will be available on February 5, 2025 from Marvel Comics.
