The player base for the online survival game plenty of Rust servers for beginners, but gamers can also play the title completely solo.

One of Rust's most enjoyable features is dealing with the inevitable shenanigans that occur when players inhabit a server with 99 other people. This can be very difficult for new players who spawn into a server where everyone else has already acquired the Rust blueprints necessary to build powerful gear and technology, and many people may want to try Rust single-player. Newbies can fall victim to being constantly killed by stronger players, keeping them from ever building up their own supplies and fortresses. If players want to enjoy a single-player Rust experience with no one else present, they have several options for creating their own single-player-focused server.

How To Play Rust Solo On PC With A Dedicated Server

To enjoy Rust as a single-player game on PC, players must host their own servers. Developer Facepunch Studios lets any player host their own Rust Dedicated Server. Gamers need to first install SteamCMD, which is the command-line console used to run Steam files. Players will then need to visit the Facepunch FAQ wiki to the files necessary to begin their private Rust single-player server. There's a link to the quick start zip folder at the bottom of the page.

To start a single-player Rust server on PC, s need to extract all of the files from the zip folder. There will be a text file that includes commands to boot up a base Rust server. Enter these commands one at a time to begin ing the Rust solo server:

anonymous

force_install_dir "c:\rustserver\"

app_update 258550

quit

These commands will take a few minutes to finish running. Next, players need to open Rust and press the F1 key to open the title's console window. From there, they'll need to enter the default path that comes with the .zip file to the server they just started. That command is as follows:

client.connect localhost:28015

Entering this will drop players into a fresh solo Rust server, where they won't need to worry about being cut down by ruthlessly powerful players. The main pro of this method is that establishing a dedicated server allows time to even when the player is offline, as long as their server is up and running. Structures will continue to deteriorate, and will need to be replaced as frequently as if they were on a more populated server.

With a dedicated Rust server, players can also adjust a number of gameplay and difficulty settings at will by pressing F1 in-game.

The con of this method, however, is that hosting a dedicated Rust server eats up a fair amount of RAM - 12 GB, to be exact - and demands a solid internet connection. Unless the player has significantly more RAM than that, or is able to host their Rust server on a separate PC, they'd be better off trying a different method.

How To Play Rust Solo On A Console With A Private Server

Single-Player Rust On PS4, PS5, & Xbox

Things are a little easier, if more expensive, in the console edition of Rust. Since players on consoles can't open a command line or install applications from the web, they'll have to use a server set up by another person. So in effeect, for those playing the Rust Console Edition, they'll need to rent their own community server, host their own game, and then play solo. While this is not the intent of the game's private servers, which are still meant to be enjoyed with others, it does mean s can technically play Rust solo on consoles, too.

GPortal is the officially recommended marketplace for the rental of Rust community servers. Players can choose the length of their rental periods; at the time of writing, the options are $24.74 USD for 30 days, $74.23 for 90 days, or $148.46 for 180 days. The price per day is effectively the same across all options, so it may be best to start with a thirty-day period and renew as needed. Players can still adjust gameplay settings as if they had founded the server themselves.

For the best possible connection, players should select a server location as close to themselves as possible in the dropdown menu on GPortal.

Renting a Rust server is a very low-tech way to play solo, as it doesn't require the player to enter console commands or have exorbitant amounts of RAM. This method also provides free backups of save games, as well as crossplay compatibility. It can get expensive, however, and if the player's payments lapse, they'll lose every bit of progress they've made.

How To Play Rust Solo On PC Or Console With Dead Servers

Single-Player Rust On All Platforms, With A Catch

Starting a single-player Rust server from scratch can be difficult, and/or expensive. However, there are many dead servers still active on Rust that have few to no players at all times. ing one of these can simulate the single-player experience without expense or complication. These servers may not be truly and totally empty; there may be other individuals or small groups playing on them. But if the maps are large enough, there's little likelihood of running into rivals. Players can even prioritize ing these servers during off times when they're the only person online.

In order to find a mostly-dead Rust server, it's best to use a site like BattleMetrics to search for options. Players can set their search parameters to include only servers with, say, two or fewer players, and then browse the available choices. Clicking on one will display a graph of its player counts over time; ideally for single-player, a graph will be pretty flat and rarely stray above a handful of players. Of course, there may be reasons these servers are inactive, like poor connectivity or toxic s, but with time, players can experiment and find one that suits their needs.

Playing Rust in single-player is the perfect way to learn essential Rust strategies, like what tools to craft first and how to begin amassing resources. Although potentially difficult or expensive to set up, players also have the alternative option of using a mostly-dead server. Either way, these less chaotic first experiences can help them learn all of the ins and outs of Rust.
