February's State of Play Rumors, Explained

The Presentation Could Be Broadcast On Valentine's Day

There's a possibility that Sony could be planning a State of Play presentation that will be broadcast in February. The rumor comes from known leaker NateTheHate, who responded to a person's query on X regarding the date of the next State of Play. Furthermore, when asked for specifics regarding the presentation, NateTheHate gave a cryptic response, asking "What does your heart tell you?", implying the showcase could be broadcast during Valentine's Day, which is on February 14.

As with any rumors, there's no way of telling whether this claim is accurate until an official announcement is made. However, it is worth noting that NateTheHate has a fairly good track record when it comes to predicting gaming announcements. Most recently, he accurately predicted the reveal date for the Nintendo Switch 2, making his prediction regarding a showcase in February more believable. Beyond the rumors, Sony has done a State of Play presentation within or near February every year since 2021, so it wouldn't be at all surprising to see a new showcase broadcast within the next few weeks.

PlayStation Plus 2026 Plans Prove Sony Is Finally Embracing The PS5, 5 Years Too Late

Sony has redoubled its for the PS5 with a major new PlayStation Plus decision, but with the PS6 on the horizon, it seems too little, too late.

A State of Play presentation this month would also make sense with the number of games that are in need of an update. There are a few major titles making their way to PS5 in 2025, including the likes of Death Stranding 2: On The Beach and Ghost of Yōtei. These titles will be in need of a proper showcase to show players what they have to offer, and a State of Play presentation in February would be the perfect opportunity for Sony to achieve just that.

Marvel's Wolverine Deserves The Limelight In 2025

It's One Of The Most-Anticipated PS5 Exclusives

Wolverine's adamantium claws in Marvel's Wolverine's reveal trailer.

That being said, there's one PlayStation exclusive that should take the spotlight over any other title in the next State of Play presentation, that being Marvel's Wolverine. Since its initial reveal in 2021, Wolverine has quickly become one of, if not the most anticipated exclusive coming to PS5, and it's not hard to see why. While a game surrounding one of Marvel's most beloved superheroes was always going to stir up excitement, this was only propelled by the involvement of developer Insomniac, who is known for its hugely successful and critically-acclaimed trilogy of Spider-Man games.

A true focus on Wolverine would allow the title to broaden its appeal and build excitement surrounding its release

Marvel's Wolverine deserves the limelight in 2025 to show just how special this project is. With a proper showcase, it gives the game a chance to demonstrate to players the incredible single-player experience they will find themselves in, while allowing Insomniac to show its fundamental understanding of the character in the same way it achieved with Peter Parker and Miles Morales in Spider-Man. A true focus on Wolverine would allow the title to broaden its appeal and build excitement surrounding its release, giving the game the attention and anticipation it deserves.

A focus on Wolverine would also help to maintain the PS5's success over the next few years. While there are huge titles making their way to the console over the next few months, there's little that's known regarding plans for the PS5 beyond this point. By prioritizing a game as highly-anticipated as Wolverine in the next State of Play presentation, it reminds and assures players of the stellar titles PS5 has and will continue to offer, showcasing the continued worth of the console.

We Don't Know Enough About Wolverine

The Game Has Only Made One Official Appearance

A focus on Marvel's Wolverine during the rumored State of Play in February is also necessary in order to provide an update on the game that players are desperately waiting for. The announcement trailer shown during the State of Play in September 2021 remains as the game's only official appearance, while Insomniac have mostly kept quiet regarding the game's development. While the wait for Wolverine's release is certainly understandable, since Insomniac would have prioritized Spider-Man 2 prior to that game's release, the lack of information surrounding premise, gameplay and development progress is still baffling.

The deafening silence is only made worse by the possible hindrances that have been made to Wolverine's development, whether that be the Insomniac data breach in 2023 or the reported changing of creative directors that occurred in Summer 2024. The refusal from Insomniac to provide details on Wolverine's progress during this period will only cause concern among fans over the game's current status. The lack of updates could even cast doubt among players over how the final product itself may turn out, potentially harming the excitement surrounding Wolverine's release.

The Insomniac leak in 2023 also revealed a potential game based on Venom planned for release in 2025. If this is true, then Insomniac could also be placing focus on this game over Marvel's Wolverine.

Regardless of when the next State of Play is planned to be broadcast, it is paramount that Marvel's Wolverine be prioritized for the event. A focus on Insomniac's latest project would not only give a glimpse into plans for the PS5's future, but it would provide players with reassurance over the game's status and progress. There's no doubt that a lot of effort and ion is being placed into Logan's latest video game adaptation, and the game is deserving of being put under the spotlight in 2025.
