While Batman’s son searches for his destiny on Lazarus Island, Flatline murders Damian by literally ripping his heart out of his chest. Thankfully, death on Lazarus Island is not permanent, and the two quickly fall in love despite the rocky start.
However, Flatline is not the only recent character with whom Damian has had a romantic connection. The story "The Executive Game" by Tim Seeley and Juan Ferreyra introduces readers to Loveless. This story, which first appeared in Batman: Urban Legends #7 and was recently reprinted in Future State: Gotham #14, sees Damian’s Batman 666 from a dystopian future facing off against the Devil to save Gotham. Also present in this story is Damian’s rogues' gallery, composed of villains inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins. Loveless personifies lust and appears to have a romantic connection to Damian Wayne’s future Batman, stirring up speculation that the villainess may have past ties to the hero.
Like Flatline, Loveless is introduced as a villain, but the similarities between the two run deeper than their questionable morals. Flatline and Loveless’ uncanny resemblance has raised many questions about a possible connection between the characters. Both are depicted with unnaturally white skin and a pink and black color scheme. Not only are their appearances similar, but Loveless’ connection to the Deadly Sin of Lust and Flatline ripping out Damian’s heart have led to both characters’ designs containing a heart motif. Although it would break Damian Wayne’s heart, based on these observations, the new theory that Flatline will become Loveless looks like it could be the direction DC is taking her character.
It could be argued that the evidence linking Flatline to Loveless is superficial at best, but the possibility of Damian’s villainous girlfriend becoming his nemesis has so much fun potential. Given the violent nature of her introduction, Flatline’s character developing into a future Batman villain brings her relationship with Robin full circle. Aspects of Loveless would also make much more sense if this theory is proven true. Everything from Loveless’ heart motif to her apparent connection to Damian would feel more meaningful if she was the future Flatline.
The possibility of Flatline evolving into a villain for Damian’s Batman is intriguing and could be an excellent twist for fans invested in the relationship. However, relationships should be the least of Damian’s problems at the moment, as Gotham: Future State #14 shows several future Batmen are headed to war with each other. Whether or not Robin’s girlfriend Flatline is revealed to be Loveless, this theory adds another layer to Damian’s interactions with his future nemesis.
