From the twisted mind of Danny McBride comes HBO's The Righteous Gemstones, and the Righteous Gemstones cast is full of recognizable faces from other McBride productions and beyond. Centered on a family of televangelists and their various antics, the comedy series is full of larger-than-life characters, most of whom are prone to either taking themselves too seriously or acting like fools. The true brilliance of the series, however, lies in its cast’s ability to mine their characters for such hilarious comedy.

Following two televangelist generations in the Gemstone family, The Righteous Gemstones cast consists of four main players: patriarch Eli Gemstone, eldest son and pastor Jesse, the middle child and oddball Judy, and Youth Pastor Kelvin. There is also a revolving door of recurring characters and guest stars that add significant color to the Righteous Gemstones cast and allow the series to keep spinning its wildest narrative threads.

Danny McBride As Jesse Gemstone

McBride has played many outlandish characters, and the Jesse Righteous Gemstones character is definitely at the top of the list, full as he is of bluster and arrogance. McBride has created numerous television series for HBO, including Eastbound & Down, in which he plays Kenny Powers, a baseball player who has to return to his hometown as a substitute gym teacher. As is usual with a McBride-created show, Eastbound and Down is very abrasive and irreverent.

Before heading the Righteous Gemstones cast, McBride found some of his co-stars for the series from his other HBO series Vice Principals, which saw him and Walton Goggins battle it out for the title of principal at a public middle school. McBride has a long list of credits to his name, and most would be surprised to know that he penned the screenplays for the new Halloween trilogy with David Gordon Green. He frequently collaborates with Seth Rogen and James Franco, starring in films like This Is the End, Pineapple Express, and Your Highness. He'll soon reprise the role of Jesse for The Righteous Gemstones season 3.

John Goodman As Dr. Eli Gemstone

Before starring in the Righteous Gemstones cast, John Goodman has been in many funny roles, but arguably his best-known is iconic sitcom dad Dan Conner in Roseanne. Whereas Roseanne was always coarse in the sitcom, Dan was a moderating influence, providing a source of stability for all the other of the family. Goodman has reprised his role for The Conners.

There are shades of Dan Conner in the Eli Righteous Gemstones character, the patriarch of the Gemstone family, with Eli seeking to bring balance to his loved ones' chaotic lives and acting as the voice of reason. However, Eli isn't without his faults, as he's had a violent streak in his past, something that's revealed in season 2, and it's arguable that he chose money and status over family a number of times.

Adam DeVine As Kelvin Gemstone

The Kelvin Righteous Gemstones character isn't the oddest of the three Gemstone siblings, but he certainly is one of the most misguided. Kelvin feels simultaneously burdened with and overjoyed by being the baby of the family and makes some questionable decisions in his role as a youth pastor. He's constantly on the hunt for Eli's approval and tries time and time again to prove that he's worthy of more responsibility and a position of leadership. The Kelvin Righteous Gemstones actor Adam DeVine is also known for playing Adam DeMamp in Workaholics, a sitcom he co-created. He is also known for playing Bumper in the Pitch Perfect movies and TV spinoff series, Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin.

DeVine also notably played the character of Andy Bailey in Modern Family, someone who was a genuinely good guy just trying to find love. He brings some of that characterization to the Righteous Gemstones cast in the character of Kelvin Gemstone, someone who just wants to get his father’s love and approval.

Edi Patterson As Judy Gemstone

Even in a series that is renowned for its outlandish characters, Edi Patterson’s character of Judy Gemstone in the Righteous Gemstones cast is something else. As the most ignored of the family, she tends to act out and do and say things that are truly ridiculous. Patterson has had a very well-established presence in movies and TV, but she is probably most familiar for appearing in the cast of the murder mystery movie Knives Out, in which she played Fran, the housekeeper for the murder victim Harlan.

Patterson has collaborated with McBride before, playing oddball teacher Ms. Abbott in Vice Principals, and decided to retain the same actress. She brings a similar zany sensibility to her Judy Righteous Gemstones character with unrepentant glee as Judy arguably gets some of the wildest lines on the show and acts out with nothing but overbearing selfishness and unbridled emotion. Patterson has also starred in Violent Night as Alva and will appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog miniseries Knuckles in 2023.

Tony Cavalero As Keefe Chambers

Keefe Chambers is one of the stranger characters to in The Righteous Gemstones cast. As a reformed Satanist, the Keefe Righteous Gemstones character looks at Kelvin as his spiritual leader, and is willing to do and say whatever he is commanded. The Keefe Righteous Gemstones actor is Tony Cavalero, and he's been in several movies and TV shows during his career, but arguably one of his most high-profile roles was in the comedy series School of Rock, in which he plays Dewey Finn, the educator who teaches the students how to play together as a band. He also starred in the 2022 Christmas movie, It's a Wonderful Binge.

Walton Goggins As Baby Billy Freeman

There are many bizarre men and women who appear in The Righteous Gemstones cast, and Goggins brings a loose cannon energy Baby Billy, Eli’s conman brother-in-law. The Baby Billy Righteous Gemstones actor had to go through quite the makeup transformation, as the character is in his 70s. This isn’t the first collaboration between McBride and Goggins, because they also both appeared in the acerbic and blunt-edged HBO series Vice Principals. Goggins plays Lee Russell, one of the teachers whose ego leads him to do many terrible things in pursuit of the principal’s job. He recently played Earl "Peanutt" Montgomery in George & Tammy.

Cassidy Freeman As Amber Gemstone

While Jesse is something of a boor, he nevertheless manages to gain the unqualified and love of his wife Amber, played by Cassidy Freeman in the Righteous Gemstones cast. Freeman imbues her character with an inner strength that is often disguised by her more submissive exterior. The Amber Righteous Gemstones actor has had a number of ing roles through the years, but she is arguably best-known for her long-running role as Cady Longmire, a lawyer who ultimately runs for sheriff in the Western series Longmire. Her most recent role is Cassidy in 2021's The Forever Purge.

Skyler Gisondo As Gideon Gemstone

Like many of the other of the Gemstone family, there’s more to the Gideon Righteous Gemstones character than meets the eye. He has a very hostile view of his father, and actor Skyler Gisondo brings this out with skill and depth. This isn’t surprising, given that he has been in a number of prominent roles, though arguably his most notable is that of Young Shawn in the very popular series Psych, a role that he played in the fifth and sixth seasons. Outside of being in the Righteous Gemstones cast, the Gideon Righteous Gemstones actor played Eric in The Santa Clarita Diet and Sam in The Resort.

Tim Baltz As BJ Barnes

Despite her many issues, Judy seems to have cast a genuine spell on her fiancé, the BJ Righteous Gemstones character, played by Tim Baltz in the Righteous Gemstones cast. Jennifer Nettles As Aimee-Leigh Gemstone

Kelton DuMont as Pontius Gemstone — Pontious is Jesse's second son and Gideon's younger brother, and he has just as much if not more distaste for his father in later seasons. Pontious Righteous Gemstones actor Kelton DuMont has also had roles in Logan, Mosaic, and SEAL Team.

Gavin Munn as Abraham Gemstone — Abraham is Jesse and Amber's youngest son. Outside of the Righteous Gemstones cast, Munn has appeared in Raising Dion, Rectify, and 8 Slices.

Scott MacArthur as Scotty — Scotty is a stuntman and coworker of Gideon's who assists in blackmailing Jesse and his friends before taking over the operation entirely when Gideon gets cold feet. Mary Hollis Inboden as Mandy — Mandy is Amber's friend and the wife of Chad, until she divorces him after seeing the Atlanta tape. They reconcile in season 2. Mary Hollis Inboden is known for starring alongside Annie Murphy in Kevin Can F*** Himself and has also had parts in Murderville and Shrill.

Cullen Moss as Brock — Brock is a security guard for the Gemstones' family compound, which includes a biblical theme park. Actor Cullen Moss has also had roles in Your Honor, Outer Banks, and Black Bird.

Jade Pettyjohn as Dot Nancy — Dot is the rebellious teenage daughter of two Gemstone church that Kelvin takes a special interest in mentoring as her Youth Pastor. Outside of being in the Righteous Gemstones cast, Jade Pettyjohn has also appeared in Little Fires Everywhere, Destroyer, and Fire Country.

Jason Schwartzman as Thaniel Block — Jason Schwartzman has a small role as Thaniel Block, the investigative reporter from Brooklyn writing about the Gemstone family. His subsequent murder is one of the biggest season 2 plot threads. Schwartzman is best known for his collaborations with Wes Anderson, appearing in most of the director's films, including Rushmore,The French Dispatch, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Eric Roberts as Glendon Marsh Jr. — Eric Roberts s the Righteous Gemstones cast as Glendon Marsh Jr. a wrestling promoter who also has past ties to Eli. Roberts has over 700 credits to his name but is most well-known for The Expendables, The Dark Knight, and Runaway Train.

Eric André as Lyle Lissons — Lyle Lissons is a Texan televangelist who wants to rope Jesse into building a resort with him called Zion's Landing. He and his wife are the season 2 antagonists. Eric André has his own series, known as The Eric Andre Show, and has also had roles in Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, Sing 2, and Bad Trip.

Jessica Lowe as Lindy Lissons — Jessica Lowe s the Righteous Gemstones cast as Lindy Lissons, Lyle's wife and equally cunning business partner. Lowe has also starred in Blended, Minx, and Wrecked.

Steve Zahn as Peter — the incomparable Steve Zahn s The Righteous Gemstones season 3 cast as Peter, who is described as a militia leader. Zahn is a highly recognizable figure, previously having roles in The White Lotus, War for the Planet of the Apes, and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

Marla Maples as Gay Nancy — Marla Maples plays Gay, Dale Nancy's wife and Dot's concerned mother. Maples has also had roles in Happiness, Maximum Overdrive, and Executive Decision.

Joe Jonas as Himself — Joe Jonas cameos in a season 2 episode of The Righteous Gemstones as a friend of the Lissons and a co-investor in Zion's Landing. Outside of cameoing in The Righteous Gemstones cast, Jonas is famous for being one-third of the pop band the Jonas Brothers.

Wayne Duvall as Glendon Marsh Sr. — Wayne Duvall plays Glendon Marsh in Eli's season 2 flashbacks. Father of Junior, he's a criminal a professional wrestling promoter. Duvall is best known for O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Lincoln, and The Hunt.

Macaulay Culkin as Harmon Freeman — The famous Culkin sibling appears as grown-up Harmon Freeman, Baby Billy Freeman's estranged son whom he abandoned at a mall during Christmastime of 1993.
