Akira. The Akira anime was based on the epic manga series of the same name by Katsuhiro Otomo, who also directed and wrote the 1987 movie. It's up to his friend Kaneda to stop him, in addition to learning the backstory of the mysterious "Akira."

This swings back around to Rick And Morty's Akira reference, which happens in season 4's premiere episode "Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat." The opening sees the titular duo arriving on a planet so Rick can steal some death crystals, which lets those who use it see their possible deaths. Morty uses one and discovers that one outcome sees him dying with his eternal crush Jessica, so he sets out to make that a reality.

Anime references come thick and fast around the midway point of this Rick And Morty outing, as the latter - driven almost mad in his efforts to be with Jessica - takes on cops and even the army while armed with gadgets and weapons stolen from Rick. During this rampage he even floats in the air like Akira's Tetseo, and he's eventually put on trial for his actions. He manages to escape consequences by "psychically" reading the presiding judge a message from her late husband. The news later reveals the judge in the "Akira Boy" case committed suicide to be with her husband.

Adult Swim's dark comedy takes its Akira homage a step further in the finale, where Morty becomes a giant, body horror monstrosity - again, like Tetseo does in Akira. At least Morty gets a happier ending as Rick saves him, though he's scolded by Jerry for helping to turn his son into an "Akita." Rick And Morty's "Edge Of Tomorty" had a lot of fun with its various Akira nods, and it's about as close to a remake fans of the classic anime want to see.
