Speaking with Famitsu, Resident Evil's 25-year history has seen the series change quite drastically on more than one occasion.

In its original incarnation, the tentpole direct sequel to RE7, this year's RE Village further expanded upon the mechanics packed within the 2017 experience. But what might a ninth mainline entry do to shake things up yet again?

Morimasa Sato recently spoke with Japanese publication Famitsu about the future of Resident EvilSiliconera translated excerpts from the interview, wherein Sato itted being unsure about how the narrative will proceed following the wild adventure in Resident Evil Village. He mentioned an interest in continuing to explore what defines horror, though, telling Famitsu the following: "There are certain clichés with classic horror creatures, scenarios, and execution, but “fear” is essentially a primitive reaction to an unpredictable or unknowable event. So I feel like there is only a new sense of horror, or a new Resident Evil, only after breaking those clichés."

Sato later noted that Resident Evil has always evolved in an effort to deliver the best horror experience possible. But with regards to where such a trajectory may take the brand next, Sato had this to say: "I don't know know how the Resident Evil series will evolve in the future."

It won't be spoiled here, but Resident Evil Village's ending suggests the story behind Ethan Winters is not yet complete. Sato's comments imply the development team remains unsure of whether or not to follow through on a third chapter for this particular tale, though.

At the very least, the world of RE Village will eventually have more on offer. Capcom announced during its free RE Village DLC separate from the paid content is in the works.
