Where does the CG-animated TV series The Resident Evil timeline begins with Resident Evil Zero, where Rebecca Chambers learns about the recent T-Virus outbreak and the evil plans of the Umbrella Corporation. Then, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine investigate Umbrella's experiments at the Spencer Mansion in 1996's Resident Evil, kicking off the main story - and the series itself.

Resident Evil Village then reduce the scale to focus on a new character, Ethan Winters.

That's a tricky timeline even for fans to keep track of, let alone newcomers. Fortunately, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness doesn't deal with the complex plot of Resident Evil 6 or the solo adventures of Chris Redfield or Ethan Winters. Infinite Darkness takes place in 2006, two years after the events of Resident Evil 4, featuring the same protagonist Leon Kennedy, and another prominent character in President Graham. Claire Redfield from Resident Evil 2 also works alongside Leon to investigate an attack on the White House.

Viewers can expect plenty of connections to other Resident Evil installments in Infinite Darkness, but its plot doesn't rely on strong links to other parts of the RE timeline or most of the video games. As for its place in the chronology of the CG-animated Resident Evil anime movies, the Infinite Darkness TV series is the second entry of four, taking place roughly one year after Resident Evil: Degeneration - which reunited Leon and Claire - and a few years before Resident Evil: Damnation or Vendetta.

The setting of Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness plays in its favor, as it allows the show to tell a more concrete story without the need to set up a future title or resolve previous mysteries or plot holes. This is a big advantage, considering a major criticism against the CG-animated movies has been their lack of a strong narrative. Of course, it being a Resident Evil release, it wouldn't come as a surprise that Leon and Claire's 2006 mission could be set up the plot of a new video game installment or introduce a retcon that changes how fans see the timeline.
