Nubia's Redmagic 8 Pro gaming smartphone is launching in the U.S. Incidentally, it's also the first gaming phone to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 flagship processor. For those who might not be familiar with the brand, Redmagic is the gaming arm of Nubia, which is a smartphone brand that's spun off from ZTE.

The Redmagic 8 Pro series has already made its debut in China and includes the Redmagic 8 Pro and the Redmagic 8 Pro+. However, only the former seems to be getting a global release. As expected, there are some differences between the two phones. Nevertheless, the Redmagic 8 Pro packs some pretty impressive specs. The global launch has been scheduled for Jan. 6 at 7 a.m. EST, and pre-orders will begin on Jan. 28.

Redmagic 8 Pro Has Advanced Cooling

The Redmagic 8 Pro has a 6.8-inch Full HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 960Hz touch sampling rate, and a 16MP front-facing camera that is hidden under the display, which contributes to its clean and almost bezel-less design. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor is paired with 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. Redmagic has also added a custom R2 chip which improves gaming features such as touch sensitivity, haptic , and audio.

The phone has triple rear cameras, consisting of a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN5 main sensor, 8MP ultra-wide camera, and 2MP macro camera. That's underwhelming for a flagship phone, but not surprising as the cameras of most gaming phones are usually the weakest link. The Redmagic 8 Pro has an improved cooling system called ICE 11 which the company says has the largest VC liquid cooling plate in the industry. There is also a 20,000 RPM cooling fan. The phone has a headphone jack and 520Hz shoulder triggers.

Redmagic has squeezed a 6,000mAh battery under the hood of the phone, and it is paired with 80W fast charging. This is faster than the 65W fast charging of the Redmagic 7 Pro. However, like select OnePlus smartphones such as the OnePlus 10T, the international variants of Redmagic phones usually have a slower charging speed than their Chinese variants. So there is a chance the same may apply to the Redmagic 8 Pro. Unfortunately, there is no for wireless charging. Nevertheless, the phone should come with a charger in the box. The Redmagic 8 Pro has a starting price of ¥3,999 (~$575) in China, but it may cost a bit more when it lands in North America.
